The DENR assures the public that the Berong Nickel Project will not cut trees in one instance. Activities are phased, and each phase must be paired with replacement planting and rehabilitation.

The project must plant at least 2,661,700 indigenous and mangrove seedlings and maintain them for three years, with long‑term protection required thereafter.

Local communities and families will be engaged for planting, maintenance, and protection, and DENR must validate their work before any payment is released. Monitoring is conducted by DENR professional foresters and a multi‑sectoral oversight team.

Members of the indigenous Mandaya-Manobo tribe of Davao Oriental filed a complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman against Generoso Aguio, Director IV of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, over alleged corrupt practices.

The group claimed it has yet to receive P19 million in mining royalties and alleged that Aguio was interfering in their indigenous peoples’ organization. They also appealed to NCIP Chairperson Nancy Catamco to address the issue in Region XI.
