This October, as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Month, we honor the resilience and ingenuity of indigenous communities who continue to nurture both culture and nature. With this yearโs theme, โWeaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development,โ First Gen spotlights the inspiring journeys of two Indigenous Peoples (IP) communities it supports, each proving that cultural pride and sustainability can go hand in hand.
In Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija, the Igorot-led Maluyon Integrated Cultural Farmers Association (MICFA) cultivates fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants while bringing their harvests directly to consumers, improving household incomes, and helping restore forests and preserve biodiversity through First Genโs BINHI program.
Meanwhile, in Jabonga, Agusan del Norte, the Maraiging Mamanwa Farmers Skilled Workers Association (MAMAFASWAS) is reviving buri and abaca weaving while cultivating a 15 hectares of abaca and fruit tree plantations that strengthen food security, peace, and community resilience.
Together, these communities show how heritage, enterprise, and stewardship can move us toward a more resilient, regenerative future.
Happy National Indigenous Peoples' Month!
