No Google at our fingertips.
No Facebook groups.
No YouTube tutorials for almost everything.
And definitely… no ChatGPT.

Just books, handwritten notes, photocopied materials, personal experience, conversations with Filipinos, and a lot of:

“Okay, how do I explain this in a way my student will actually understand?” 😂

More than two decades later, I’m still here—still teaching Tagalog, still learning, and still amazed at how much a language can bring people together.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching Tagalog to people from very different walks of life—expats and Fil-Ams, foreigners married to or dating Filipinos, professionals relocating to the Philippines, business owners and CEOs, and even celebrities and social media influencers.

I won’t name names. 🤐

A teacher learns very quickly that 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯. 😄

But every student has taught me something, too.

Some wanted to communicate better with their Filipino partner.

Some wanted to connect with their spouse/BF/GF or in-laws.

Some simply wanted to stop smiling and nodding during Filipino family gatherings while secretly wondering:

“𝗔𝗻𝗼 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗴-𝘂𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮?” 😂

And then there are the moments that remind me why I love teaching.

When a student finally survives a Filipino family gathering without panicking.

When they make their first Filipino friend using Tagalog.

When they understand a joke without needing it translated.

When their Filipino partner or family suddenly hears them speak Tagalog—and smiles.

𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀.

Of course, teaching Tagalog has its challenges.

𝗧𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗯𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿. 😅

And sometimes pronunciation can create… unexpected situations.

One of my English-speaking students once confused “tamad” with “tamod.”

Let’s just say… that was one Tagalog lesson neither of us was going to forget. 😂

But that's also what makes language learning beautiful.

You make mistakes.
You laugh.
You learn.
You try again.

And somewhere along the way, you're not just learning words and grammar—you’re learning 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗷𝗼𝗸𝗲, 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀.

That’s why after all these years, I still believe that teaching Tagalog is not simply about teaching a language.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘀—𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

From the days of handwritten notes and photocopied lessons to today's world of Zoom, social media, online resources, and AI, one thing hasn't changed:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

To my fellow Tagalog teachers and Filipino language educators:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴?

And to all Tagalog students and Filipino language learners:

"Ama naming Diyos,

Lumalapit po kami sa Iyo para sa aming bansang Pilipinas.

Sa gitna ng maraming hamon, ingay, pagkakawatak-watak, at pagod ng bayan, naniniwala kami na Ikaw pa rin ang Diyos na may kapangyarihang magpagaling ng aming lupain.

Tulad ng Iyong pangako sa 2 Chronicles 7:14, kapag ang Iyong bayan ay magpapakumbaba, mananalangin, at hahanapin Ka, diringgin Mo po kami at pagagalingin Mo po ang aming bayan.

Panginoon, ipinapanalangin namin ang lahat ng leaders ng gobyerno—mula sa pangulo hanggang sa mga local officials sa barangay level.
Bigyan Mo po sila ng wisdom na hindi lang galing sa talino kundi mula sa Iyo.

Palitan Mo po ang pride ng humility, ang corruption ng integrity, at ang pansariling interes ng tunay na malasakit sa mamamayan.

Maghari Ka po sa bawat opisina, komunidad, at tahanan. At magsimula Ka rin po sa amin—na maging mabuting mamamayan na marunong magmahal, manalangin, tumulong, at manindigan sa katotohanan.

Salamat, Panginoon, dahil hindi pa tapos ang Iyong magandang plano para sa Pilipinas. Naniniwala po kaming may pag-asa ang bansang ito habang Ikaw po ang aming sandigan.

31 online lessons later… we finally met in person! 😂🇵🇭🇺🇸

Knowing how much we laugh (and how “loud” our Tagalog sessions can get 😅), we took it al fresco so we wouldn’t scare the other customers.

Between the summer heat and my Tagalog Q&A torture (LOL), Ryne was definitely sweating—but he stayed cool and survived our first face-to-face lesson! 💪

From screen to real life—same energy, same laughs, just a lot more "pawis" (sweat).🤣
