9 common vision problems & management
π£ What are common vision problems?
β Vision problems can affect distance vision, near vision, central vision, side vision, colour vision, or overall clarity.
β Some are corrected with glasses, while others need medical treatment to prevent permanent vision loss.
π£ 1. Myopia β nearsightedness
β Far objects look blurry, but near objects may be clearer.
β Usually corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or selected laser procedures after eye evaluation.
π£ 2. Hyperopia β farsightedness
β Near work like reading may be difficult; some people also get eye strain or headache.
β Managed with proper eye testing and prescription glasses/contact lenses.
π£ 3. Astigmatism
β Vision may look blurry, distorted, or stretched at near or far distance.
β It happens due to uneven curvature of the cornea or lens and is corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or selected surgery.
π£ 4. Presbyopia
β Age-related difficulty in near vision, usually noticed after around 40 years.
β People may hold reading material farther away; reading glasses or multifocal lenses may help.
π£ 5. Cataract
β Clouding of the eye lens causes hazy vision, glare, poor night vision, and faded colours.
β Cataract surgery can restore vision when cataract starts affecting daily activities.
π£ 6. Glaucoma
β Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and may slowly reduce side vision.
β Early glaucoma often has no symptoms, so regular eye pressure and optic nerve checks are important.
β Treatment may include eye drops, laser, or surgery to slow damage.
π£ 7. Age-related macular degeneration
β AMD affects the macula, the part needed for sharp central vision.
β It may cause blurred central vision, difficulty reading, or straight lines looking wavy.
β Treatment depends on type; wet AMD may need eye injections, while some dry AMD cases may need monitoring and supplements advised by an eye doctor.
π£ 8. Diabetic retinopathy
β Diabetes can damage retinal blood vessels and cause blurred vision, floaters, dark patches, or vision loss.
β Good sugar, BP, and cholesterol control plus regular dilated eye exams are very important.
β Treatment may include laser, eye injections, or surgery depending on severity.
π£ 9. Colour vision deficiency
β A person may have difficulty distinguishing certain colours, commonly red-green shades.
β It is often inherited, but can also occur due to eye, nerve, brain disease, injury, or medicines.
β There may be no cure for inherited cases, but colour-labeling tools, filters, and workplace/school adjustments can help.
π£ General management tips
β Get regular eye checkups, especially if you have diabetes, high BP, family history of glaucoma, or age above 40.
β Use prescribed glasses or contact lenses correctly.
β Control diabetes, BP, cholesterol, and avoid smoking.
β Protect eyes from injury and UV exposure.
β Do not use steroid eye drops or random eye medicines without an eye doctorβs advice.
π£ Seek urgent eye care if
β Sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, eye injury, flashes of light, new sudden floaters, curtain-like shadow, double vision, severe redness, or vision changes with headache/weakness occur.
β These may suggest serious eye or brain-related problems.

"Why Can't I See Clearly Even With My Glasses On?"π
Patient: Good day, Optician.
Optician: Good day. How can I help you today?
Patient: I wear my glasses every day, but lately my vision still isn't clear. Why is that happening?
Optometrist : When did you first notice the change?
Patient: About two weeks ago. I thought cleaning my glasses would fix it, but it didn't.
Optometrist : Blurred vision while wearing your glasses can happen for several reasons. Your prescription may have changed, your lenses may be scratched, your glasses may need adjustment, or there could be another eye condition affecting your vision.
Patient: So it doesn't always mean I need stronger glasses?
Optometrist : Exactly. A stronger prescription isn't always the answer. It's important to find the actual cause.
Patient: Should I just buy a stronger pair?
Optometrist : No. It's best to have your eyes examined first. Changing glasses without knowing the reason may not solve the problem.
Patient: What if the blur happened suddenly?
Optometrist : If your vision becomes suddenly blurry, especially in one eye or if it's accompanied by pain, flashes of light, or loss of part of your vision, seek urgent eye care immediately.
Patient: I understand now. Blurry vision with my glasses isn't something I should ignore.
Optometrist : Exactly. Your glasses should help you see clearly. If they no longer do, it's time to find out why.
Patient: Thank you, Optician.
Optician: You're welcome.
π Takeaway:
ποΈ If you can't see clearly even with your glasses on, don't assume you just need a stronger prescription. An eye examination can identify the real cause.

ποΈ Do You See Colours the Same Way Everyone Else Does?
Most of us assume everyone sees colours exactly as we do. But for millions of people, identifying certain colours can be surprisingly difficult. This condition, known as Colour Blindness does not usually mean seeing the world only in black and white.
As an Optometrist, I believe spreading awareness about colour vision is just as important as correcting refractive errors. Early detection helps children, students, and adults adapt better to daily life and make informed career choices.
π What is Colour Blindness?
Colour blindness is a condition where a person has difficulty distinguishing certain colours because the cone cells in the retina do not function normally. It ranges from mild colour confusion to, in rare cases, complete absence of colour perception.
The Three Main Types
π΄π’ Red-Green Colour Blindness (Most Common)
Difficulty distinguishing red and green shades. This is the most common inherited type.
π΅π‘ Blue-Yellow Colour Blindness
Less common and affects the ability to distinguish blue and yellow colours.
β«βͺ Complete Colour Blindness (Monochromacy) (Very Rare)
Vision is mainly in shades of grey and may be associated with reduced visual acuity and light sensitivity.
𧬠What Causes Colour Blindness?
βοΈ Genetics β The most common cause, inherited and more common in males.
ποΈ Eye diseases such as retinal disorders, glaucoma, or optic nerve disease.
π§ Brain injury or stroke affecting the visual pathways.
π Certain medications and age-related eye changes.
β Could These Be Signs?
πΈ Do red and green appear similar?
πΈ Are traffic lights or colour-coded charts difficult to identify?
πΈ Do colours seem dull compared to what others describe?
πΈ Is matching clothes challenging?
If your answer is yes, a comprehensive eye examination is recommended.
π©Ί Can It Be Prevented?
While genetic colour blindness cannot be prevented, acquired colour vision problems may be reduced by:
β
Protecting your eyes from injuries.
β
Managing conditions like diabetes and hypertension.
β
Having regular comprehensive eye examinations.
β
Seeking prompt care if colour vision changes suddenly.
π¨ββοΈ When Should You See an Eye Care Professional?
Never ignore sudden changes in colour vision, especially if accompanied by blurred vision, eye pain, head injury, or after starting new medications. These may indicate an underlying eye or neurological condition.
π A Final Thought
Colour blindness is not a disabilityβit is a different way of perceiving colours. With early diagnosis, guidance, and awareness, individuals with deficiency can thrive in education, careers and everyday life.
As eye care professionals, our role is not only to treat vision problems but also to educate communities and promote early detection.

Why it matters-Be a vision hero!
The Child Who Never Looks Up
One of the most important developmental vision clues may have nothing to do with visual acuity, eye alignment, or refractive error.
It may be the child who never looks up.
The toddler who spends most of their time focused on objects within arm's reach.
The child who rarely scans a room.
The child who does not visually explore a new environment.
The child who seems unaware when a parent, sibling, or caregiver enters from across the room.
The child who rarely looks to others for visual information.
At first glance, it may seem insignificant.
After all, their eyes may be healthy.
Their ocular health examination may be normal.
Their visual acuity may even be age-appropriate.
Yet vision is more than seeing clearly.
Vision is also about gathering information, directing attention, supporting movement, and helping children make sense of the world around them.
Visual exploration is a developmental skill.
From infancy, children learn by looking. They visually monitor caregivers, notice changes in their environment, track movement, and connect what they see to what they hear, touch, and experience.
When visual exploration is reduced, it can influence far more than vision alone.
It may be associated with differences in:
**Visual attention
**Sensory processing
**Motor development
**Social engagement
**Language acquisition
**Autism spectrum disorder
**Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)
**Other developmental conditions
This is why developmental vision assessment should go beyond asking:
"Can this child see?"
We should also ask:
"How is this child using vision to learn about their world?"
Sometimes the most meaningful finding is not what a child sees.
It's what they never look at.

Progressive Lenses
Reality vs Expectations vs Over Expectations
After working closely with eye care professionals, opticians, and progressive lens wearers, one thing becomes very clear:
Successful progressive lens wear is not determined by the lens alone. It depends on whether expectations are aligned with reality.
Customers often choose progressive lenses expecting freedom from multiple spectacles and seamless vision at all distances.
The challenge arises when expectations become assumptions, or when over expectations replace reality.
Reality β
β’ Clear vision at distance, intermediate, and near zones
β’ A short adaptation period may be required
β’ Proper frame selection and accurate measurements are critical
β’ Lens design significantly influences visual comfort and performance
Expectations β
Today's progressive lens users expect:
β Clear vision at all distances
β No need to switch between multiple spectacles
β Comfortable daily wear
β Better aesthetics without visible bifocal lines
These are reasonable expectations when the right lens is recommended and dispensed correctly.
Over Expectations β
Some misconceptions include:
β’ Perfect vision in every direction without moving the head
β’ Instant adaptation from day one for every wearer
β’ Unlimited reading and computer zones in a single lens
β’ Premium performance from a basic lens design
The Success Formula:
A successful progressive lens experience is a combination of:
β Right lens design
β Accurate centration measurements
β Suitable frame selection
β Proper dispensing and patient education
When expectations are aligned with reality:
β’ Adaptation becomes easier
β’ Satisfaction increases
β’ Complaints reduce
β’ Confidence improves
As eye care professionals, our responsibility is not just to recommend progressive lenses.
It is to set the right expectations before dispensing.
