Paskuhan was more than a celebration—it was a feeling. A night where music stitched strangers into one crowd, where laughter spilled across the field, and where the campus reminded us that the season is best celebrated when shared. Between the beats of the concert and the quiet warmth of giving, every moment felt like home.

Thomasian Architects gathered for “Architectural Sketching and the Power of Design Narrative” — a talk that reminded us that architecture is, above all, a language of stories.

Through the words of 𝗔𝗿. 𝗣𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗔. 𝗙𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗼, and the insights of 𝗔𝗿. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻 and 𝗔𝗿. 𝗔𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻, students rediscover how every stroke carries intention, how AI amplifies creativity, and how clarity and courage shape design. Reminding all of us that whether hand-drawn or refined by technology, architecture remains, at its heart, an act of imagination, courage, and a purposeful narrative.

Because in every sketch lies the beginning of a story — 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭.

“𝘈 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘴.”

In an age where technology renders ideas with near-perfect precision, the UST College of Architecture revisited the power of imperfection — the hand-drawn line, the raw sketch, the story told through strokes.

Held at the Beato Angelico Building, the event featured Ar. Pavel A. Fomenko as guest speaker, alongside Ar. Caryn Santillan and Ar. Arvin Pangilinan. Entitled “𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲”, the event gathered architects and students to explore how sketching remains a vital language of design even in the digital era.

Ar. Fomenko opened with a simple yet profound idea: “𝘈 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘴.” To him, sketches are more than visual studies — they are narrative devices, translating the architectural thought into something clear, self-explanatory, and human. Sketching, he emphasized, helps us communicate — not only to clients or peers but to ourselves, as a means to understand the spaces we imagine. Through sketches, architects study the technicalities of form, light, and space — but more importantly, they build the narrative thread that connects concept to community. “𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦,” he shared, “𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦.”

In his talk, Ar. Fomenko shared a personal experiment — a series of handmade paintings of industrial landscapes. By scanning these and running them through AI, he transformed them into something cinematic, revealing how digital tools can amplify, not replace, the artist’s hand. “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, he encouraged. “𝘋𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘥. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.” He explained that AI works on ideas — it builds upon the intellectual premise that an architect sets. ”𝘐𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳,” 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥, “𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘻𝘻𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘻𝘻𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵.” For him, it all comes down to clarity of thought — the same kind that defines an engineer’s diagram or an architect’s conceptual sketch. His message was simple: focus on the idea, keep it simple, and be fearless about it.

Following the main talk, Ar. Caryn Santillan and Ar. Arvin Pangilinan joined the round table discussion, offering their insights on how AI continues to transform architectural workflows — much like how BIM revolutionized practice years ago. “𝘈𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘣𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴,” they remarked. “𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵’𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥.”

When asked how to overcome creative blocks in sketching, the panel left a line that lingered long after the discussion: “𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘧𝘸𝘢𝘺.” Creativity, they said, thrives on movement — once an idea begins to roll, it only grows stronger, evolving toward completion.

In the end, the event was more than a talk; it was a poignant reminder of where design truly begins — that in every line drawn lies intention, and in every stroke, a story. Whether guided by the hand or enhanced by technology, architecture remains an act of storytelling —𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺. Because at its core, architecture isn’t just about building structures — it’s about building meaning. And in the roughest of sketches lie the first words of a story, reminding us [students] that even in the digital age, the most powerful design tools remain the same: 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹, 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱.
