When devotion becomes something you can carry, what does it look like?

This necklace reflects a long tradition of embodied devotion in Catholic practice, where sacred objects were designed to be worn close to the body. In the Philippine context, especially during the Spanish colonial period, such pieces were commonly fashioned by women as part of everyday religious life.

The rosary stands out for its refined design. Made of gold and coral beads, it features a large relicario pendant at the center. Originally, the pendant held relics of saints; over time, it became purely decorative, featuring filigree work.

This relicario is decorated with a delicate gold plant motif, with three teardrop-shaped leaves etched with fine lines. The beads and links carry simple leaf and bud patterns, while fine gold wires curl into tendrils with small leaves, giving the piece a soft and flowing feel.

Dating back to the 19th century, the piece is currently on view at the LAKAMBINI: Ang Marikit na Pamana ng Baro’t Saya exhibit at the Centro de Turismo Intramuros mezzanine. Alongside fashion ensembles, it is presented with other antique accessories that ground the exhibit in everyday expressions of identity and faith.
