Sister Eva Fidela Maamo was a nun, a surgeon, and one of the country’s quiet giants of public service. As a 1997 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, she was honored for bringing health care and hope to people who could barely afford either.

Through the Foundation of Our Lady of Peace Mission, she built no-fee clinics in poor communities, led medical-surgical missions that treated tens of thousands for free, and ran feeding, shelter, and livelihood programs for the most vulnerable.

She has now passed away at 85, but her life remains a powerful reminder: compassion, when made concrete and courageous, can help build a nation.

It highlights how countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan succeed through unified systems, clear standards, and disciplined implementation. In contrast, Philippine transport agencies often operate independently, causing inefficiencies and delays.

The core idea is to create a national framework that aligns policies, infrastructure, and enforcement under one system. Rather than launching new projects, the focus is on integration. If executed well, this approach could improve consistency, reduce waste, and make existing transport investments work more effectively nationwide.

The Philippines is asking the US to extend a waiver so it can keep importing Russian oil during an energy crunch. That raises a bigger question: if we are in a crisis, why do our fuel options still depend on foreign approval? Energy security should mean more than waiting for permission.

Not all heroes wear scrubs. Some serve coffee, listen quietly, and show up every day for 30+ years.

At a London hospital, that kind of consistency just got its own signboard. Jose “Joe” Paculan, a Filipino-born café manager, is being recognized not just for longevity, but for turning a simple café into a space of comfort for patients, families, and staff when they need it most.
