xN4SZINEx -- When did you stop eating meat and what originally motivated that decision?

xSWENJAx -- When I was 11, I stopped eating meat. I did it for the sake of the animals & wanted to live a healthier life.

xN4SZINEx -- Many people struggle to change their eating habits. What were the biggest challenges you faced when you first stopped consuming meat and how did you overcome them?

xSWENJAx -- Actually, I didn't have much trouble with it. At first, I did miss eating fish a bit, but that feeling quickly passed. I no longer crave it, & - especially these days - there are great alternatives available, so no animal has to die.

xN4SZINEx -- What are some of your favorite meals to cook? Do you enjoy experimenting in the kitchen and what would you proudly serve to someone who thinks they could never enjoy meat-free food?

xSWENJAx --I love baking more than cooking. However, I enjoy cooking for my family & friends. Above all, I love cooking Indian dishes, such as Veggie-Thai-Curry with rice, vegetables, coconut milk & a vegan meat alternative.

xN4SZINEx --When and how did straightedge enter your life? What were the main reasons that led you to choose the straightedge path?

xSWENJAx --I was 15 when I got into the straight-edge scene through friends & concerts. I was never interested in drugs or losing control; I wanted to live life on my own terms. A close friend died because of drugs & that was a major factor too.

xN4SZINEx -- How important is being a straightedge to your identity today?

xSWENJAx -- It’s just as important to me now as it was back then. It means having agency over my own decisions, steering my life, not losing control & staying on the path to pursue my dreams. The sense of community & the connections within the scene with like-minded souls are also truly wonderful & important to me.

Today, we unveil another glimpse into the unknown—a teaser interview with xPOISON IVYx, Vegan Straightedge Hardcore from Bulgaria.

xN4SZINEx -- In a world where intoxication and meat consumption are normalized, what keeps you committed to the straightedge path today?

xPOISON IVYx

Grigor: For me it’s extremely easy, I have had more issues with substances than most and it’s still a cake walk if you have the right people around you.

Abi: The fact that something so destructive is normalized is what keeps me committed. Watching animals suffer or watching people and loved ones destroy themselves, their relationships and their health should be enough to make anyone stay off that s**t.

George: I feel really comfortable with the way I experience the world and how I face both hardships and joy. It’s not just substance addiction that I don’t want to mess with this - all of these experiences are so important to me I don’t want the filter of a single sip to distort them.

Alek: What keeps me going is my pure hatred towards intoxication culture. The most punk thing you can do is just say no. It's like a big F**K YOU to everyone who thinks this is “normal” and “this is how it should be”!

Evko: Going to group therapy, seeing like-minded people and sharing my troubles with them. I’ve gained total awareness of the fact that it’s my responsibility to keep clean and no substance abuse is gonna fix me, straight edge is just extra motivation for that.

xN4SZINEx -- Can you tell us about your straightedge journey? What first inspired you to claim edge and what has kept you committed ever since?

xBETTY KREGx -- My straight edge journey started after a period in my life when my lifestyle had become unhealthy and went too far. At the same time, I went through some difficult and tragic events, which made me realise that something needed to change. I made the decision to quit all bad habits quite suddenly, in one day. At that point, I didn’t even know the term “straight edge.”

Later on, I came across the concept and realised it deeply resonated with me. What inspired me most was the idea of staying clear-minded, being present, and having control over my own life and choices.

xN4SZINEx -- What led you to stop eating meat?

xBETTY KREGx -- I’ve loved animals since childhood and never really understood why people eat them. But when you’re a child, you don’t really have a choice, especially growing up in Ukraine at that time, where it wasn’t very common or widely discussed. At 16, I made the decision to stop eating meat. It also happened around the same time I decided to start living sober.

xN4SZINEx -- How would you define “hardcore” in your own words and experiences? How has hardcore shaped your identity, beliefs and way of living?

xCAMI CHOICEx -- I define hardcore as a trench. A space from which I can resist in a world filled with cruelty, indifference, and injustice.

More than a musical style or a scene, it has been a guide for me. Hardcore gave me values,
principles and tools to face life at a time when I could not find them anywhere else. Because
of family abandonment, I had to go through very difficult situations and even lived on the
streets at a young age. In that context, hardcore became a point of reference, a shield and a
way of trying to understand the world.

Many of the convictions I hold today were born or strengthened through what I found within
hardcore: the importance of consistency, resistance, solidarity and the constant search for a
life with purpose.

Sometimes I think that without hardcore I could have gone down the wrong path. Without
guidance, there was a time when that seemed possible. I do not know where I would be
today, but I do know that it helped me build an identity based on principles that I still defend
to this day.
