COMPASS ROSE ✅⚓️🧭

Basic Things To Know✅

This picture shows a compass rose diagram that compares True North and Magnetic North and helps explain variation (the angular difference between them.

A compass rose is a circular diagram printed on nautical charts, maps, and compasses that shows directions around a full 360° circle.

Brief Explanation:
• The outer circle (blue numbers) represents True bearings (0°-360° measured from True North).
• The inner circle (black numbers) represents Magnetic bearings measured from Magnetic North.
• The diagram shows that Magnetic North is 18 ° West of True North (written as 18 ° W 2024 (30 ° E)), meaning there is 18 ° West variation at that location.
• The red arrow labeled 60° True and 78° Magnetic shows how the same direction appears different depending on whether you use True or Magnetic bearings.
• True bearing: 60°
• Magnetic bearing: 78°
• The 18° difference is due to magnetic variation.
• The blue scribbles at the bottom are just markings and do not affect the diagram's meaning.

Basic Things To Know ✅

This image shows the day and night signals used by different types of vessels so they can be properly identified at sea.

🔆 Day Signals

During daytime, ships display shapes:
• RAM (Restricted Ability to Manoeuvre) – ball/diamond/ball shapes
• Fishing Vessel – two cones facing each other
• Sailing Vessel – no shapes unless also using the engine
• PD (Pilot Duty) Vessel – no special shapes, but has a pilot flag (not shown here)
• NUC (Not Under Command) – two black balls
• CBD (Constrained by Draft) – a cylinder shape

🌙 Night Signals

At night, ships use lights instead of shapes:
• RAM Vessel – red-white-red lights
• Fishing Vessel – red over white lights
• Sailing Vessel – red and green sidelights with no masthead light
• PD Vessel – white over red lights
• NUC Vessel – two red lights
• CBD Vessel – three red lights in a vertical line

These signals help other vessels know who has maneuvering priority and avoid collisions.
