Plastic waste reaches the ocean mainly through litter carried by wind and rain into drains and rivers, which function as “plastic superhighways.” Additional pollution comes from discarded fishing gear. The biggest contributors are not always the largest producers of plastic, but countries with long coastlines, heavy rainfall, extensive river systems, and weak waste management. The Philippines alone accounts for an estimated 35% of ocean plastic, followed by other Asian countries including India, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Thailand. Brazil is the only non-Asian country in the top 10. Reducing plastic production and strengthening waste systems are essential solutions.

In 2025, MBC strengthened its engagement with government through the Government Dialogue Series, meeting with then Finance Secretary Ralph Recto, Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno, and DA Secretary Kiko Tiu Laurel Jr. to discuss key tax and fiscal matters, modernization of customs processes, and private-sector collaboration in agriculture. MBC also engaged with local leaders, including Bataan 2nd District Representative Abet Garcia, Hermosa Mayor Anne Inton, and Iligan City Mayor Frederick Siao, to support local economic development and advance initiatives on ease of doing business, access to information, and sustainability, among others.
Through these dialogues, MBC expressed its full support to help advance national socioeconomic priorities.
