The DICT reports that the Philippines' state of cybersecurity is still at its infancy stage as of March 2022. According to the COBIT (Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology) Maturity Model, level 1 means that there are still “no standardized processes in place.” When it comes to the cybersecurity maturity model, the nation is still mostly in a reactive and manual state.
In a series of cybersecurity attacks in 2023, millions of Filipinos’ personal information from government servers were compromised, including PhilHealth, DOST, PNP, NBI, and BIR. The PSA also suffered from a data breach affecting its Community-Based Monitoring System although they state that personal information were not affected.

Geopolitics isn't just about countries and borders—it's a game of strategic positioning and power plays on a global scale.
Because of its geography, the Philippines is at the center of the changing geoeconomics of trade, supply chains, and shipping routes. The nation is a sought-after gateway for the Great Powers due to its strategic location as a gateway between the Pacific and the rest of Asia. Situated in close proximity to the South China Sea, Mainland China, Taiwan, and the Pacific Ocean, the nation finds itself caught up in the intensifying great power competition between the United States and China.
