SURF LLORENTE OFFICIALLY KICKS OFF WITH A SPLASH, DRAWING LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL CROWDS LLORENTE, EASTERN SAMAR – The coastal waters of Barangay 8, Poblacion Llorente, Easterm Samar erupted with excitement this morning as the highly anticipated Surf Llorente: Open Surfing and Skimboarding Competition commenced its three-day run. The opening ceremonies, which began at 9:00 AM, were graced by Municipal Mayor Christine M. Cardona, who delivered an inspiring address to the gathered athletes, officials, and spectators. In her talk, Mayor Cardona recounted the municipal government's journey in promoting surfing as a premier water sport since 2018, highlighting its significant role in establishing Llorente as a thriving surf destination and boosting the local economy. "From a hidden gem, we are steadily putting Llorente on the map, not just in Eastern Samar, but in the entire region VIII," Mayor Cardona stated, emphasizing the sport's potential for community growth alongside its natural tourist attractions . Also present to show his full support was Councilor @Jesus JC Ato Guab, the Sangguniang Bayan Chairman on Sports Development. Councilor Guab underscored the importance of the event in honing the skills of local athletes. "Through annual competitions like this, supported by Lgu Llorente, we are not just hosting a tournament; we are building a pathway to create future surf champions from our very own community," he remarked. The competition has drawn a diverse field of participants, showcasing its growing prestige. Athletes have traveled from Cebu City, Northern Samar, Tanauan Leyte, Guiuan, and Borongan to compete against the homegrown surfers and skimmers of Llorente. Adding an international flair to the event, surfers from California and Colorado, USA, were also spotted catching waves during the Day 1 activities. The ceremonial highlight of the morning was the traditional "breaking of the board," led by Mayor Cardona, together with Councilors @Jesus JC Ato Guab and Gunda Reynon. This act served as the official signal for the start of the 3-day coastal sports festival. Following the opening program, the competition officially began at 1:00 PM on the same date, with athletes taking to the waves in the first rounds of surfing and skimboarding heats. This year's Surf Llorente is sponsored by the Local Government Unit of Llorente in coordination with the Togdon SkimSurf Organization of Llorente, headed by Michael Angelo Campo.
