For most first year students, adjusting to college is already a big challenge. But for Dan Lyza Salvador, a Bachelor of Forensic Science freshman, the past month came with an achievement that proved her passion for writing continues to shine.
On September 22โ23, 2025, the NVC Forum Publication held a two-day Journalism Boot Camp at the NVC Gymnasium, Kalibo, Aklan. The program โ designed to strengthen campus journalism, offered sessions and workshops on basics of photojournalism, news writing, feature writing, editorial cartooning, and lay-outing.
For Dan Lyza, the highlight came in the feature writing workshop, where her skills and creativity earned her the title of Most Promising Feature Writer โ an award presented just before the closing of the event.
Her journey as a writer began back in her 7th Grade, when she entered the Special Program in Journalism (SPJ) at LNHS. At the time, journalism wasnโt something she had planned. โActually kase I didnโt really have any idea about journalism noon. Nagkataon lang talaga noong nag-apply ako sa school for high school, napabilang ako sa mga SPJ students,โ she shared.
Yet that unexpected placement opened doors. โNoong naging SPJ na ako, doon ko lang narealize na mahilig pala ako magsulat โ or rather gusto ko ang pagsusulat. Parang yung journalism mismo ang naging dahilan kung bakit nadiscover ko yung sarili ko, which is ang pagiging writer,โ she added.
Today, even as she enters the field of forensic science, Dan Lyza continues to nurture her love for words. She remains active in writing as a writer for the NVC The Forum Publication and also as a writer for the Forensic Science Student Organization Page โ a proof that her passion never faded.
Her recognition as Most Promising Feature Writer is not just a personal milestone but is also an inspiration. From a student who stumbled into journalism by chance, to a college freshman balancing science and storytelling, she shows that sometimes, the things we stumble upon by chance turn out to be the very passions that shape us.

The Forensic Science Student Council (FSSC) of Northwestern Visayan Colleges, under the Criminal Justice Education Department, successfully held its first-ever Welcoming Ceremony and Orientation Programme with the theme โUnveiling the Path to Justice.โ This historic event marked a meaningful milestone as it brought together faculty, officers, and students to celebrate the beginning of another academic year in the Forensic Science community.
The program began with the Doxology led by Ms. Jessie Joy Bereber, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the NVC Hymn. Words of welcome were delivered by Ms. Sharon F. Retubis, RCrim, Forensic Coordinator, who emphasized the importance of embracing this new chapter with passion and determination. An inspirational message was also shared by Dr. Patrick Earl D. Prado, Dean of the Criminal Justice Education Department, who encouraged the students to remain steadfast in their pursuit of knowledge and justice.
Highlighting the activity proper, Dr. Vicente S. Quimpo, Program Head of the Forensic Science Department, led the orientation proper, providing a comprehensive overview of the program. This was followed by the Office of the Student Affairs orientation conducted by Mr. John Joseph C. Quimpo, Executive Committee of OSA, who discussed important student services and welfare. To further guide the students, Maโam Rudith Mae R. Dela Cruz from the NVC Registrarโs Office oriented them on essential academic processes and requirements. In addition, the NVC Library provided an orientation on available resources and facilities, ensuring that students are fully equipped with the knowledge and support needed for their academic journey. Adding to the excitement, FSSC Governor Angel V. David introduced the organizations under CJED, further immersing students into the vibrant community they are now part of.
One of the most anticipated moments of the day was the introduction of the first-year Forensic Science students. They were warmly welcomed into the growing NVC Forensic Science family, marking the official start of their journey as future forensic professionals. To cap the event, engaging group activities were conducted, fostering teamwork and unity among students across year levels.
The program concluded with the closing remarks of FSSC Adviser, Ms. Vanessa T. Zapico, RCrim, who reminded students of their role in upholding the values of justice and integrity. With the success of this first welcoming ceremony, the Forensic Science Student Council looks forward to a year filled with learning, growth, and meaningful experiences.

From a four-corner room to a dimly lit majestic stage, each place and event was marked by agents of truth โ the Forensic Science students of Northwestern Visayan Colleges.
The Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science program at Northwestern Visayan Colleges was established just years ago, born out of inquiring minds and a love of justice. Like many endeavors, it started from scratch with a small number of students enrolling. Nonetheless, the passion, perseverance, and determination of the students exceeded their numbers.
Since its inception, the Forensic Science department has remained steadfast, refusing to declare defeat. Instead, they fought, gave their best, and brought home the bacon! Some notable achievements that bring pride and honor to the Forensic Science department include their triumphs in the NVC Palaro 2024, where their fellow agents shone. Notable alumni include Twinkle Mariano, a recent graduate who won 2nd Runner-Up and Miss Photogenic.
Additionally, Forensic Science students excelled as Champions in the Acapella category, and Team Primos concluded as Overall Champions. The department also made its mark at the NVC Criminal Justice Acquaintance Party 2024, with Princess Cauilan, now a 3rd-year student, crowned Queen of the Night, and the ForenIV + 1 Band proudly taking home 1st place.
Despite being small in number, the Forensic Science department continues to prove that quality surpasses quantity. Numbers are just that โ numbers. What matters most is coming together as one, participating, and representing the idea of unity. And when it comes to numbers, they stand as ONE! ๐ต๐ปโจ

The competition brought together some of the finest debaters from different institutions, which made the experience both challenging and inspiring. The team is deeply grateful for the opportunity to showcase what they have learned and for the valuable lessons that will guide them in their future journeys.
โStanding as the third speaker was both nerve-wracking and fulfilling, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to learn, to grow, and to represent Northwestern Visayan Colleges. More than that, I carried with me the pride of my Forensic Science family, whose support and inspiration pushed me to do my best. We may not have brought home the championship, but for me, this was already a victory: a victory of courage, of stepping out for the first time, and of realizing that growth happens outside our comfort zone,โ Cauilan shared.
The achievement of these students is not just a plaque. It is proof that passion, persistence, and unity can turn challenges into triumphs, and that this is only the beginning of greater victories to come.
