What is the difference between ADHD and Autism?
Probably the most commonly asked question I get- and one that’s super hard to answer on paper! Yes, there’s overlap between traits and many differences are do to the WHY and HOW a person does things (like with social communication differences) rather than IF they do things. That’s also why just looking at diagnostic criteria can be unhelpful.
I also see a LOT of Autism traits traits be described as ADHD traits, when that’s just not true and most likely the person being described is undiagnosed AuDHD.
In many cases, you will need a very knowledgeable evaluator (which isn’t as easy to find as you may think!) to tease apart Autism, ADHD, or both. But here’s a list of traits that are *more likely* to be explained by Autism or AuDHD than ADHD alone.
With that said, all people are different and you can be ADHD with a couple of autistic traits. But if you are seeing patterns of differences from more than one slide below, that’s when I recommend an evaluation ❤️
