Plant Trichanthera In Open Spaces In Your Farm For Chicken, Goats

In the vacant spaces of your farm, it is wise to grow Madre de Agua (sn: Trichanthera gigantea) a plant with very practical and multiple uses, especially if you raise goats, native pigs and chicken.

Native to South America, Madre de Agua was introduced to the Philippines only in recent years and it grows well in Philippine conditions especially in partly shaded areas.

With a protein content of up to 22% to 23%, Madre de Agua could be served to chicken in enclosed breeding pens which do not have access to green grass.

My chicken in breeding pens love Madre de Agua and every morning they are served pruned tops with plenty of leaves.

Here are added information on Madre de Agua from wikipedia and Google:

"Trichanthera gigantea is a species of flowering plant in the acanthus family, Acanthaceae. The species is known by many common names, including madre de agua, suiban, cenicero, tuno, naranjillo, palo de agua and ketum ayam.

"It is a fodder tree also known as Nacedero which was introduced in the Philippines some years ago from Latin America (Columbia and Venezuela) and adapts well in local tropical conditions. It is used as fodder for pigs, rabbits and ruminants.

"Medicinal properties for humans have been also attributed to it. Its green stems are used to cure nephritis and its roots as a blood tonic. Its sprouts are used in maize porridge for human consumption (Vasquez 1987). In some regions it is used as a lactogenic drink for nursing mothers (Ruiz 1992)."

Planting Madre de Agua in the sloping areas of your farm will also prevent soil erosion.
