Darrell D. Simms
Author, Publisher & Speaker
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 31, 1953, Darrell Simms spent his formative years living in government project housing. He attended school inconsistently, finally dropping out at the age of 14 to work as a caddy at the nearby country club. After finding his way back to school and inspired by his stepmother to do something worthwhile with his lif
e, at age 19 he enlisted in the Navy, which provided him with a chance for a college education under the GI bill. After a Navy tour in the Philippines, he entered the University of Washington through the assistance of an Equal Opportunity Program. He ended up in a Physics research program that was design to find better methods for teaching the educationally disadvantaged minorities. This led him to discover a love for Physics where he was able to excel academically. He graduated with a minor in Physics and a BS in Industrial Engineering. His academic achievements continued, and, years later, he taught a management class at the University of Oregon’s Graduate School of Management for several years. After graduation, Darrell became a nuclear power safety engineer for Westinghouse, a technical salesman for IBM and an executive assistant to the city council for the City of Portland Oregon. At this time, he noticed how inequitably and poorly, people worked and communicate with each other from different ethnic backgrounds, especially Black and White Americans. In the Navy and at the university, he had learned he could understand people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, especially White Americans. As his understanding grew, he developed a fascination with in*******al and inter cultural relations and a desire to share his insights with others. This desire was realized in 1990 when he started Management Aspects Company (MAC). The mission of the firm is to help organizations to understand racial, ethnic, and cultural issues, in addition to helping them manage organizational change. MAC also has an international mission in Southeast Asia helping educational organization to understand how to develop and implement comprehensive instruction in mathematics and science. Extending Darrell’s previous work for the City of Portland, MAC has assisted government municipalities in developing minority- and women-owned businesses. In 1991, Darrell Simms authored and MAC published “Black Experience, Strategies & Tactics in The Business World,” a book written to assist young, professional Black Americans to succeed in corporate America. He has also authored a curriculum for helping teach management and organizational development to help improve racial and cultural relations to many northwest organizations and corporations. Through his community involvement he co-founded Project MISTER, a program to encourage young Black men to take responsibility for their lives in Seattle, Washington. In 1997, Darrell Simms authored and MAC published “May I Help You Understand?” In this book he combines his Christian faith with his in*******al understanding, to improve relations between White and Black Americans. In March 2003, Darrell Simms authored and MAC published “The Mahogany Table!” A fiction novel of murder mystery and business intrigue that portrays the life of a Black engineer, who leaves the projects of New Orleans, Louisiana to build a multi-billion dollar Hi-tech corporation headquartered in Seattle, Washington with business divisions and holdings through out the world. In 2006, Darrell Simms authored and MAC published, “the Dash Club” a book that hopefully enlightens and encourages people on how they might live their lives to their fullest potential. Darrell currently lives in Tabunok, Tapilon, Daanbantayan on the island of Cebu in the Philippine Islands in Southeast Asia, where he recently retired from a Professorship teaching technical subjects in science and engineering in the Philippine University System.
