As classes officially opened today for School Year 2026โ€“2027, more than 26 million Filipino learners returned to their classrooms under a new set of reforms introduced by the Department of Education (DepEd).

Amid fresh beginnings and renewed expectations, one reality remains clear: educational reforms should not be measured by their promises, but by their impact on learning. While these changes offer hope, they must be scrutinized with equal rigor.

DepEdโ€™s reform package includes a three-term school calendar, the ILAW Framework for lesson planning, revised assessment policies, a strengthened Senior High School curriculum, and increased support for teachers.

According to Education Secretary Sonny Angara, these initiatives aim to make learning more effective and reduce unnecessary burdens on educators. Such objectives are both timely and necessary, especially as the country continues to confront learning gaps exposed by recent assessments.

Yet reforms alone do not guarantee improvement.

For years, reports have shown that many Filipino learners struggle with reading comprehension, mathematics, and critical thinking. These challenges cannot be resolved simply by introducing new guidelines.

A revised calendar may improve lesson pacing, but it does not automatically address overcrowded classrooms, shortages of learning resources, or uneven access to quality education.

Supporters argue that the three-term academic calendar provides more opportunities for remediation and enrichment.

DepEd also maintains that simplified lesson planning will allow teachers to focus more on instruction rather than paperwork.

These measures deserve recognition. However, they should have been implemented much earlier. Teachers have long called for reduced administrative workloads, making this reform less of a breakthrough and more of a long-overdue response.

Moreover, revised grading and assessment policies seek to provide a clearer picture of student learning. This is a step in the right direction. Nevertheless, identifying struggling learners is only the beginning. Without sufficient interventions, tutoring programs, and classroom support, improved assessments may reveal problems without solving them.

To its credit, DepEd conducted nationwide orientations and preparations before the opening of classes. Such efforts demonstrate a commitment to smoother implementation. However, Philippine education has witnessed many well-intentioned policies that struggled once they reached the classroom.

Effective implementationโ€”not ambitious announcementsโ€”will ultimately determine success.

Teacher support also remains a critical concern. Additional benefits and allowances are welcome developments, but genuine support extends beyond financial assistance. Educators need manageable class sizes, adequate facilities, relevant training, and sustained institutional backing to deliver quality instruction.

Education reform should not end with policy launches and opening-day optimism. It must continue through consistent monitoring, transparent evaluation, and meaningful improvements in student outcomes.

Filipino learners deserve more than promises of change; they deserve evidence that change is truly happening.

As this school year begins, DepEd must ensure that its reforms translate into measurable progress inside every classroom. Stakeholdersโ€”students, teachers, parents, and policymakersโ€”must remain vigilant and engaged.

Success should not be declared at the start of the journey. It must be earned through results that can be seen, measured, and sustained.

If classrooms do not improve, then reforms are just words wearing new uniforms.

โ€ŽThe Land Transportation Office (LTO) urged students of Cauayan City Stand-Alone Senior High School (CCSASHS) to practice responsible driving and road safety during the "Youth on Wheels: Steering Students Towards Safer Roads" awareness campaign held on June 10 at the Bayanihan Gymnasium.
โ€Ž
Armando Babas, an LTO official, reminded students that they remain responsible for their safety even outside school, particularly while on the road.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽCiting Philippine Statistics Authority data, Babas said road crash deaths rise from 7,938 in 2011 to 11,096 in 2021, showing a 39% increase.
โ€Ž
โ€Ž"Hindi pababa ang trending ng namamatay, pataas ang trending niya... dumarami ang namamatay dulot ng road crash," Babas said.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽHe added that drivers as young as 15 to 29 years old were among those frequently involved in road accidents, with "driver error, mechanical defects, and road conditions" as contributing factors.
โ€Ž
Babas encouraged students to apply the Defensive Driving Method through the SIPDE process: Search, Identify, Predict, Decide, and Execute to avoid accidents.
โ€Ž
โ€Ž"Mahabang pasensya at maraming disiplina sa pagmamaneho ang kailangan... maging responsible tayo sa daan," he said.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽFurthermore, he explained how slowing down when emergency vehicles are around, giving ways to trucks, buses, and paying attention to beginner drivers as well as the pedestrian lane is an important factor to prevent road crashes and accidents.
