First CW 130 class in UP and we’re having our workshop this week.

Nabasa ko na mga scripts nila online, pero mas gusto ko pa rin talaga ‘yung old school—‘yung nagsi-scribble ako ng notes at comments sa papel.

Naalala ko tuloy when I had this same class in the 90s in Diliman. Si Jun Lana pa teacher ko. He had my script printed and distributed sa buong class.

“Si Noreen lang ang mahal ko kaya script niya lang na-print ko,” he said.

Twenty-eight years later, di ko pa rin makalimutan. Jun Lana yun eh. Plus it was in his class when I realized hindi ako pang poetry, fiction or children’s literature — pang TV/movies ako!

Sometimes, what feels like just another college subject ends up shaping your entire story.

A few weeks ago, I applied for a one-month writing residency in a European city.

I checked their past grantees — walang Asian. Wala ring nag-apply from the Philippines since they started less than 10 years ago. Usually, around 100 applicants, mostly from the US or Europe. Requirement: at least three published books.

So nag-apply ako.

I only told my best friend. And my mentor, na hiningan ko ng recommendation letter.

I submitted the application form and other requirements… then forgot about it.

Earlier this month, I decided to check their website.

Apparently, the announcement was delayed kasi this year, they had 420 applicants from 65 countries (the previous year, there were only 100 plus applicants).

The two grantees? Isang award-winning Palestinian author with a PhD and a young but mutli-awarded European poet/novelist/essayist.

Okay lang. Hindi nakakasama ng loob.

Applying is already the first step. Never ko na-imagine before na kaya ko palang gawin ‘to. But this is only the beginning.

My best friend said, “Law of averages lang iyan."

Maybe she’s right. You keep applying, you keep writing, you keep trying, kahit minsan parang walang napapala. Pero sabi nga nila, the more you shoot your shot, the higher the chance na may tatama rin.

For now, this is just a reminder to myself. Hindi ako nanalo, pero hindi rin ako talo. Kasi minsan, the act of trying is already a win.

Kuha noong September 2017, alas sais ng umaga. Galing ako sa Whistle Stop, ang 24-hour na restaurant sa ground floor ng ELJ Building. Buong gabing nagsulat para sa Ang Probinsyano at pauwi na. Antok at pagod pero nang makita ang tower, nagkaroon ng bagong sigla. Yung pagod, napalitan ng pride. Kasi alam mong may saysay ang ginagawa mo at importante yung script na kakatapos mo lang i-submit - para sa kuwento, para sa mga tao sa production na magti taping that day, para sa mga manonood.

Mawawala na ang ABS tower. End of an era indeed. Hindi lang siya transmitter. It was a symbol of dreams, of struggles, and passion to serve. In the service of the Filipino people, ika nga.

Pero gaya sa mga teleserye: hindi dito nagtatapos ang kuwento. May next episode pa. At naniniwala ako na sa next chapter - mas maliwang, mas makulay, at puno ng pag-asa. Ano nga ba yung sabi nila? Stars shine brightest on the darkest night.
