Happy 128th Independence Day people of the Philippines!

The 128th Independence Day of the Philippines, celebrated on June 12, 2026, marks the anniversary of the 1898 declaration of freedom from Spanish colonial rule. It commemorates the historic proclamation in Kawit, Cavite, where General Emilio Aguinaldo raised the Philippine flag and the national anthem was played for the first time.

1. The 1898 Declaration

On June 12, 1898, Filipino revolutionary forces led by General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Islands from Spanish rule. This event took place at the Aguinaldo ancestral home in Kawit, Cavite. During the ceremony, the Philippine Flag—sewed in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad—was formally unfurled for the first time. Additionally, the Marcha Nacional Filipina (composed by Julian Felipe) was played publicly as the national anthem.

2. The Early Struggle and the U.S. Era

The independence declared in 1898 was short-lived and unfortunately not recognized by either Spain or the United States. Following the Spanish-American War, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States under the Treaty of Paris. This led to the Philippine-American War, and the U.S. ultimately maintained colonial control over the country.

3. Independence on July 4

The United States eventually granted the Philippines its independence on July 4, 1946, through the Treaty of Manila. For nearly two decades, the Philippines celebrated its Independence Day on July 4, aligning with the U.S. Independence Day.

4. Transition to June 12

In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal issued Proclamation No. 28, which moved the date of Independence Day from July 4 to June 12. This change was made to appropriately honor the true birth of the Filipino nation and its original declaration of sovereignty from Spain in 1898. This shift was later officially codified into law via Republic Act 4166 in 1964.

General Education teachers often seek training in Inclusive Education and inclusive practices, particularly in teaching strategies and behavior management to better support learners with disabilities (LWDs). KIDS is privileged to have received training from an experienced SPED educator and a highly respected Occupational Therapist.

Dr. Ivan Neil B. Gomez is a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from UST, Master of Arts in Education major in Special Education from UP Diliman, and Doctor of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Medicine from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He teaches at the University of Santo Tomas College of Rehabilitation Sciences, Department of Occupational Therapy. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Rehabtrends and serves as an Occupational Therapy Consultant at SJL Therapeutic Education and Management Learning Center. He has authored and published more than 40 books, journal articles, and other publications.

Teacher Jenny Paguyo graduated from UP Diliman with a Bachelor of Science in Education major in Special Education and is currently pursuing a Master of Education major in Special Needs and Inclusive Education. She is a Licensed Professional Teacher (4th Placer in the Licensure Examination for Teachers) and a Certified MED-EL Cochlear Implant Rehabilitation Specialist. She currently works as a Special Needs Education Teacher at Kids Intervention and Developmental Learning Center and SJL Therapeutic Education and Management Learning Center.

Also joining us were teachers from Calamba Christian Academy, headed by Ma’am Leslie Canta.
