I used to roll my eyes whenever someone invited me on a hike. Why would I trade a perfectly good weekend for sweating under the sun, getting bitten by mosquitoes, and walking for hours just to see a view I could Google? It never made sense to me. I thought the outdoors was a waste of time—until I finally gave it a chance.

It started with a simple invitation from a friend. “Just try it once,” they said. “If you hate it, you never have to go again.” I figured, why not? So, I packed my things—mostly borrowed gear—and set out for my first hike with zero expectations.

The first few hours were exactly as I had imagined—exhausting. My legs burned, my back ached, and I questioned why people voluntarily put themselves through this. But then, something changed. We reached a clearing, and suddenly, the noise of the world faded. I took a deep breath, and for the first time in a long time, I felt… free.

As we climbed higher, I noticed things I had never paid attention to before. The way the trees swayed gently with the wind. The sound of birds calling out in the distance. The way the golden light of the afternoon sun painted everything in warmth.

And then, we reached the summit.

I stood there, catching my breath, looking out at a world that stretched far beyond the one I had known. It wasn’t just about the view—it was about how it made me feel. Small, yet infinite. Tired, yet alive. It was in that moment that I realized I had spent so much time locked in my routines, glued to my screens, believing that life was about deadlines and responsibilities. But out here, none of that mattered.

Since that day, I’ve never looked at the outdoors the same way. It wasn’t a waste of time—it was a reminder that time itself is precious. And sometimes, the best way to spend it is by stepping outside.
