DBAP-Feeding Program

While we are waiting on the 4th Batch of DBAP-Feeding Program to start in June of this year we have expanding our mission to feed the residents of Biliran beyond toddlers 0-60 months old.

Our latest project is to work with the Sanggalang Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association, better known as SARBA. SARBA is an organization made up of senior citizens who were given land to farm and grow vegetables for their own consumption.

SARBA was brought to our attention by SARBA Gie Cuizon, our Executive Director on the ground in Biliran, and one of 3 full time volunteers that make up DBAP-Feeding/HelensLegacy.Org.

DBAP-Feeding/HelensLegacy.Org has been able to work with the SARBA workers/volunteers to (1) provide seed money for the SARBA volunteers to build a reservoir to replace the 2 garden hoses they previously used to irrigate their croups. This has allowed SARBA to expand the total land under cultivation and greatly increase the volume of production.

DBAP-Feeding/HelensLegacy.org also (2) provided emergency funds for Green Bean seeds to replace the plants that were literally blown away by a typhoon.

SARBA is expanding from an organization designed to provide food for their members to a marketing co-op selling their produce at Saturday Farmers markets. The money aids the SARBA members improve their lives and expand their operations.

The most recent SARBA project is to expand into the egg business, the Local Government Unit (LGU) offered SARBA hens specifically for egg production and feed for several months if they could build a heh house.

DBAP-Feeding/HelensLegacy.org was able to (3) offer the association the money needed to build the henhouse. Construction is nearing completion, built by the volunteers using native materials (bamboo, thatch roof).

SARBA is an inspiration to all of us (all 3) at DBAP-Feedig/HelensLegacy.org and we look forward to continuing our association with this great group of positive, energetic seniors.
