Lowering the age of criminal responsibility is not a solution, it is an admission that we have failed to address the conditions that push children toward crime in the first place. Poverty, neglect, weak educational systems, and the normalization of violence cannot be solved by sending younger people into an already broken justice system.

A safer society begins with better schools, stronger communities, and adults willing to take responsibility for the next generation. After all, it takes a village to raise a child. The task of shaping young lives does not rest on children alone, it belongs to parents, educators, communities, institutions, and government. If we truly want to reduce crime, we must address its roots rather than merely punish its consequences.

——

Sabi nga, it takes a village to raise a child.

Luk Socrates is a visual artist originally from Northern Samar and currently based in Metro Manila. He graduated with a degree in Fine Arts majoring in Studio Arts. He is best known for his watercolor painting series, “Sa Ikalawang Pilipinas”—a humorous, Filipino-centric interpretation of the everyday experiences of ordinary people, heavily influenced by Tipos del País.

“Sa Ikalawang Pilipinas” is more than just a painting series. As the project evolved, Luk noticed that its growing cast of characters began to tell a story of their own with each new illustration. Though storytelling was never the original intention, these colorful characters gradually developed distinct personalities and hinted at lives and histories beyond the frame.

His works can be found at Komiket events in the form of prints, postcards, and sculptures, and are enjoyed by art enthusiasts and convention-goers alike. He has also partnered with CommonRoom PH. One of his paintings was recently exhibited at Altro Mondo Gallery as part of the group exhibition “Kalambre!”. He has likewise collaborated with independent writer Mang Eman on the zine project “Ako ay isang Manananggal” and has received commissions from various patrons.

Luk is currently working on his most ambitious project yet—and hoping for a blessing from above.

—Before “multidisciplinary creative” became a LinkedIn title, there was José Rizal. ✍️🎨🗿🌱

On his 165th birthday, we look beyond “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” to revisit the many creative pursuits of Dr. José Rizal. While history often remembers him as a writer and reformist, Rizal was also a painter, sculptor, illustrator, educator, cartographer, builder, linguist, farmer, and craftsman who followed his curiosity wherever it led.

His life reminds us that creativity is rarely confined to a single medium. At its core, creativity is about paying attention to the world around us, and finding ways to make it better.

HBD, Dr. José Rizal! 🎂🇵🇭
