June 24 is in 2 days and it's a big day for the people of Bago City, Negros Occidental, as the city will be celebrating its 451st Founding Anniversary and the Feast of St. John the Baptist (Fiesta ni San Juan).

Bago City Mayor Mayette Javellana graced the official kick-off of Kurit sa Layag 2026 at the Balay ni Tan Juan Community Museum this morning, June 22, which also marks as the opening of the city’s Charter Week cultural activities. She was joined by the City Tourism Affairs Office personnel headed by Senior Tourism Operations Officer Mae Ann Furtos.

Six merged barangay clusters sent in their artist-representatives to paint their "layag" (sail) as their entry for the Kurit sa Layag painting competitions.

“Kurit sa Layag” is both an art competition and a celebration of Bagonhon creativity, community collaboration, and the city’s deep connection to its culture and traditions, a statement from the City Tourism Affairs Office said.

The painted sails will then be mounted on their respective bangka (boats) and showcased during the Fluvial Parade on Wednesday, June 24, for the Basyahanay Festival. Everyone is invited to visit Bago City to enjoy the all-day events, including, the famous "basyahanay".

Today, we were in Bago City, Negros Occidental for the opening of the first-ever Watsons store in the city. The City Tourism Office under Ms. Mae Ann Furtos treated us to lunch at Kapehan ni Juan, which is located within the Balay ni Tan Juan property.

We ordered dishes for sharing na pang 2-3 pax daw. When the orders arrived, each dish is large! We were surprised! And prices are very affordable. Namit pa ila luto. Wanted to try their enkargado and karga tapas burger (with names a cultural nod to the sugar industry) but sadly, wala stock ablng enkargado burger.

Nice to have meals, snacks, and coffee here during a trip to Bago. While here, take a quick tour of the historical Balay ni Tan Juan, which is now a museum in progress.
