Water Treatment is the process of purifying raw water to make it safe for human consumption and use. It involves several stages:
Screening – removal of large debris.
Coagulation and Flocculation – addition of chemicals to form settleable particles.
Sedimentation – settling of suspended solids.
Filtration – removal of fine particles through sand or media filters.
Disinfection – elimination of harmful microorganisms, usually by chlorination or UV radiation.
Wastewater (Sewage) Treatment aims to remove contaminants from used water before its release or reuse. It includes:
Primary Treatment – physical removal of solids through screening and sedimentation.
Secondary Treatment – biological degradation of organic matter by microorganisms.
Tertiary Treatment – advanced purification to remove nutrients and pathogens.
Sludge Treatment involves thickening, digestion, and dewatering of sludge produced during treatment. Stabilized sludge may be used as fertilizer or disposed of safely.
Importance: These processes protect public health, prevent environmental pollution, enable water reuse, and support sustainable resource management.
