Matsés People Today: Health, Education and Territory in the Amazon – Part 5

What challenges do the Matsés people face in the modern Amazon rainforest today?

In the final chapter of our series, we explore the contemporary reality of the Matsés people living deep within the Javari River Basin along the Peru–Brazil border, one of the most remote and biodiverse regions of the Amazon.

This chapter examines the ongoing challenges faced by Matsés communities, including limited healthcare access in isolated rainforest villages, education in remote Amazonian territories, and increasing territorial pressure caused by illegal logging, illegal fishing, and cross-border incursions.

Despite these pressures, the Matsés continue to preserve their language, cultural identity, and traditional ecological knowledge, maintaining a resilient way of life deeply connected to the rainforest.

From bilingual education efforts and cultural continuity, to territorial protection and survival in one of the least controlled regions of the western Amazon, this final part reveals how the Matsés navigate the realities of the modern world while protecting their ancestral heritage.

The story of the Matsés is ultimately one of resilience, adaptation, and enduring connection to the Amazon rainforest.

Matsés Cosmology and Cultural Practices in the Amazon Rainforest – Part 4

How do the Matsés understand the Amazon rainforest beyond survival alone?

In Part 4 of our series, we explore the spiritual and cultural foundations of Matsés life in the Javari Basin, where humans, animals, plants, and unseen forces are understood as part of a single interconnected system.

From traditional hunting ethics and human–animal relationships, to the ritual use of to***co (Nënë), medicinal plant knowledge, and the famous kambo cleansing practices, this chapter reveals how Matsés cosmology continues to shape daily life deep within the western Amazon.

For the Matsés, the rainforest is not simply a landscape, it is a living and sentient world where balance, knowledge, and survival are inseparably connected.

This is not folklore or mythology detached from reality, but a highly sophisticated cultural system developed through generations of direct interaction with one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.

Daily Life in the Amazon Rainforest: The Matsés Way of Life in Peru (Part 3)

What does everyday life truly look like deep in one of the most remote regions of the Amazon?

In Part 3 of our series, we move beyond history and into the living reality of the Matsés people. This is where their deep connection with the rainforest becomes tangible through hunting, fishing, family life, and the constant movement across their territory in the Javari Basin.

From highly specialized ecological knowledge used in hunting, to collective family participation in forest life, and the balance between rivers, chacras, and seasonal cycles, this chapter reveals how survival, culture, and environment are inseparably linked.

This is not just a way of life, it is a highly adaptive system shaped by generations of knowledge in one of the most complex ecosystems on Earth.

The Matsés: A History of Resistance and Survival in the Deep Amazon (Part 2)
How did the Matsés manage to preserve their culture despite the rubber boom and external pressures?

In the second part of our series, we dive into the intense and fascinating history of the "Mayoruna" people. From the era of interethnic warfare and territorial defense to their strategic withdrawal into the most remote areas of the Javari Basin to avoid the rubber tappers.

We explore the pivotal moments that shaped their current world:

Territorial Mobility: Their life before the mid-20th century.

The 1969 Contact: How the arrival of missionaries changed their settlement patterns forever.

Resilience: How they transitioned from nomadic longhouses to riverine communities without losing their deep connection to the forest.

This is not just history; it is the soul of the territory we explore in our expeditions.

Planning your trip to Iquitos, Peru?
Your first instinct will likely be to book an Amazon lodge… but not all experiences are created equal. At our blog, we’ve published a guide to help you choose with clarity, safety, and real criteria.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Location matters
Not all jungle is the same. Learn the difference between accessible buffer zones and true primary rainforest.

2. What to really expect
From logistics and energy supply to food, safety, and overall structure, understand what you’re actually booking.

3. Wildlife ethics
Respect is defined by distance.
We firmly reject any tour that promotes handling wild animals for photos.

A lodge is the first introduction to the Amazon, ideal for comfort, short stays, and structured experiences.

But if you’re looking for something deeper… real survival skills, true isolation, and a raw connection with the rainforest, this guide will help you understand the difference.
