Tres Cruces and the Union Trail 3 Days

This trip takes me along a ridge which borders Andean highland and the Amazon rainforest. I begin in an area known for the Andean bear AKA Spectacled bear then follow bear tracks up to the Tres Cruces Mirador which is a surreal lookout point famous for watching the sunrise. It sits so high above the jungle at 12,000 ft that it feels like being on an airplane. From there I hike down through cloud forest on the "Trocha Union" or Union Trail which is one of Manu National Park’s only hiking routes. This trail is used by coca smugglers who carry bags of coca leaves around a police control checkpoint. This trail is also used by universities such as Oxford and Cambridge and the ABERT organization for botanical research. They have been studying the area for the last 20 years. The trail is wildly overgrown with tunnels carved out from stones, tree roots and erosion. The hike is difficult, excruciating, relentless, unforgiving but filled with wildlife like tree frogs, owls, Andean bears and caracaras. It's also one of the few hikes where you can traverse incredibly dense terrain and get a real feel of true adventure.
