Major weather events can leave our communities feeling unsettled long after the skies clear. While we often focus on keeping our physical health safe, it is equally important to protect our mental and emotional wellbeing 🧠

Because everyone responds to distress differently, what feels manageable to one person might feel incredibly overwhelming to another. To help you navigate these moments, we have put together a few gentle reminders on how to safely support yourself and those around you.

Often, it is the little things that make the biggest difference. Save this post to keep these tips handy, or share it with a friend who might find it helpful 🌦️

We are proud to introduce our Trauma 101 workshop - a safe and inclusive space designed to turn the uncertainty of hard conversations into confidence and empathy for a loved one experiencing trauma into action.

Most of us will face the weight of trauma at some point, whether it’s walking alongside a loved one or supporting a colleague through their hardest days. It’s an experience that can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Guided by our expert kaiwhakaako (facilitators), you will learn how to:

✔️ Understand what trauma is and how the nervous system responds
✔️ Recognise the short and long-term impacts of trauma
✔️ Apply core trauma-informed principles to your daily interactions
✔️ Use practical communication tools to safely support those experiencing emotional distress.

The heart of this workshop is connection, and we’d love to help you build those bridges. We have several workshops now available across Aotearoa. Visit our website to find a location near you and secure your place or request a private workshop for your team.

Whether you live in a rural area, belong to the Rainbow community, or want to draw on your own lived experience to help others, it is ok to reach out and learn new skills. Here is a look at just a few of the workshops we are running this month:

🌀 MH101: Builds your confidence to respond safely to people experiencing mental health challenges
🌀 Rural MH101: Offers tailored wellbeing support specifically for our rural and farming communities
🌀 Trauma 101: Provides a gentle framework to support someone navigating emotional distress
🌀 Addiction 101: Reduce stigma by shifting the conversation to understand the why behind addiction.

We have taken our popular Addiction 101 workshop and enhanced it to create Addiction 101 PLUS, starting in Wellington on 29 May!

This workshop provides an understanding of addiction and recovery while helping to reduce stigma. Guided by our Kaiwhakaako (facilitators), you will gain the confidence to support those experiencing addiction challenges by looking at the four walls of their wharenui. Together, we explore the factors that lead to addiction and share practical ways to walk alongside others while ensuring you also maintain your own wellbeing.

By completing the workshop alongside additional pre and post-learning booklets and a short e-learning quiz, you will earn a Level 1 NZQA micro-credential. Because this workshop uses our standard content, please only join us if you have not attended Addiction 101 before.
