How a Modern Intervention Can Transform a Humble Home This project extends a 1950s weatherboard house, reworking the kitchen and dining spaces to create a more generous centre for family life. A double-height dining space captures the northern aspect and sea views, while a new contemporary kitchen sits at the heart of the extension. A work in progress — extending a 1910s villa for contemporary living. Extending and renovating an older home involves more than simply adding space. It requires understanding the character of the existing building, how it was constructed, and how new interventions can be carefully integrated. This project explores the relationship between old and new — respecting the villa’s heritage character while responding to the client’s aspirations for modern family life, improved connections between spaces, and a stronger relationship with the outdoors. A successful renovation considers not only design quality, but also buildability, construction complexity, planning controls and practical constraints. Working closely with clients, engineers and planning specialists, the design process involves navigating resource consent requirements while developing a solution that respects the existing home and supports the way people live today. • a house with a secondary dwelling

Both test how density, privacy, and outdoor space can be balanced at the outset of design.
