The concrete columns for the new entrance Portico are all formed with the roof structure to follow.

Inside, the decoration is nearing completion, the joinery to the offices have been installed and carpet has started to be laid.

Waituna Lagoon Cultural Centre
Whakamana te Waituna Trust

Rushton Architects has been working with the Southern Institute of Technology for many years providing Architects services for the Transportable Homes constructed by the Carpentry Students. Along the way there have been the occasional one-off designs projects.

This project is a one of them, designed to accommodate the Waituna Lagoon Cultural Centre for the Whakamana te Waituna Trust.

The building was constructed by the SIT students in Invercargill and transported to site. The access ramp, stairs, decking and Porch are currently being constructed on-site.

We took the opportunity last week to pop in while down in Southland for other projects.

Lake House

WIth all the wall framing now erected, the focus goes onto forming the 'flat' roof framing sections between the pitched roof pavilions.

The pitched roof trusses are formed with inverted off-set gable trusses. These create both a flat and pitched section of the ceilings with the roof being a mono-pitch section of the inverted truss.

When our client asked for an understated 'barn' style rural residence - this preliminary design evolved.

Progress on this project has really come along since our last post.

The new Portico entrance is taking shape with the portal frames in place and the concrete columns poured.

Inside, the plastering and painting is complete the internal aluminium and timber joinery is being fitted along with the front-of-wall services.

Between hoarfrosts and snow, time on site has been limited in the last few weeks. However, timber frames for the Garage, Laundry Master Suite, Office, Den and Living Areas are stood including the chimney stack.

The restoration of the Historic Arowhenua Māori School Building - Tarahaoa has been strengthened, received its new roof cladding and work has begun on the new exterior wall cladding.

The new canopy has been formed, adding weather protection to the entrance.

The design focuses on building smarter with efficient planning, structural simplicity, elements that have dual functions and practical material selection.

With the cost of living a key issue, this commission could have a real impact with potential buyers from the first home-buyers through to the retired.

A stop off on site one morning this week just before the snow started falling. A cold murky day with the temperature siting on zero.

Bottom plates have been fixed and some frames erected for the Study and Master Suite area.
