What a way to finish!

The Waikato U18 Girls took on Harbour B in the 7th/8th playoff.

The girls came out with purpose, storming to a lead of more than 20 points in the opening quarter on the back of fantastic defence. From there, they never looked back, playing with confidence and teamwork to secure a 70–45 victory.

That wraps up the 2026 U18 National Championships with 7th placing.

With the majority of this squad playing their first tournament at U18 level, they have gained invaluable experience against the best teams in the country.

They can be incredibly proud of the way they competed - taking both knockout finals games right to the wire against quality opposition and showing remarkable resilience as injuries mounted.

To our players, coaches, managers, whaanau and supporters - thank you for an unforgettable week.

Waikato U18 Boys finished the tournament with a great win 81-68 over Counties Manukau, securing 7th place at Nationals.

What an incredible tournament from this group of young men. They put in the mahi every single game, and while three of our losses were heartbreakingly close, we just couldn’t quite finish them. That’s all part of the journey, and there’s so much to be proud of.

A huge mihi to our coaches, Jax Fisher and Ray Penny, whose knowledge, commitment, and belief in this team helped these boys continue to grow throughout the week.

Special acknowledgement to our captain, Tamatoa Jeffrey, who led with true mana. A humble, calm, and selfless leader who sets the standard both on and off the court. He consistently put team first and played with heart every game, earning the respect of everyone around him.

To our boys... you wear the Waikato colours with pride, resilience, mana and kotahitanga.

And finally, to our amazing whaanau, thank you for your unwavering support, encouragement, and aroha throughout the tournament. Your presence in the stands and behind the scenes means more than you know.

What a day of basketball for our Waikato U18 Girls! ❤️💛🖤

Two knockout battles. Two games that came right down to the line with heart, grit, and determination.

The quarter-final against North Harbour had everything. Waikato came out firing, trailing by just one at the first break before opening up a nine-point halftime lead. But North Harbour fought back, setting up a tense end-to-end battle. Our girls threw everything at it until the final whistle, narrowly going down 79–84.

With little time to recover, Waikato returned to the court for the 5th–8th playoff against Counties. Already missing a teammate through injury, the squad was dealt more setbacks as the game unfolded. Yet they refused to back down. The lead changed hands countless times before an incredible Waikato buzzer-beating three-pointer sent the game into overtime. Running on courage and pure determination, Waikato eventually fell 70–79 after an massive contest.

The scoreboard doesn't tell the whole story. This team has shown resilience, unity, and an unwavering fight for each other.

One more challenge awaits as they take on Harbour B today for 7th/8th place.
