Master Potter Jim Greig was the judging selector for the annual 1976 Waikato Potters Exhibition.

It was my first time submitting entries.

His comment about my candle holder was that
'there's a lot going on, but nothing's happening'

I now think I agree with him, along with that, all my pieces were accepted and a picture in the Waikato Times.

Good start, but it wasn't always like that.

I totally love trees, and they feature often in my work.

The panel on the left is what would be called a pottery doodle. Disconnecting the brain analyzer, playing with paper clay.
It's a one off, 350 mm long.

The idea grew and develped into a 680mm long tree panel.
That length in clay is high processing maintenance, and asking for trouble.

The cut into 2 parts makes it manageable for a successful outcome.

I'm not sure how many I’ve made over 20 years, in red, orange, lime and green, but this panel is now retired.

Colour experiments from 30 years ago—reinventing myself, exploring what felt right at the time, and learning both what worked…and what didn’t.

Pushing the boundaries of ‘firing’ in the studio…
and well… that escalated quickly..

I’ve been a little quiet lately, but thinking of you all and hoping you had a lovely Easter break

Before the fire.
After the fire.

And....gone the very next day.
These little green kiwis didn’t stay long 💚

This weather has been something else.

On Friday night I stopped my kiln when the driveway began to flood.
The rain was coming down with such force, and thunder shaking the container it sits in.

By 3am it had eased and I was fortunate to safely start it again.

Others in our community have not been so fortunate.
Seeing crops lost, land reshaped, livelihoods shaken — it’s heartbreaking.
For small growers and businesses, this isn’t just water. It’s months of planning, labour and faith washed through in hours.

Holding deep concern for those affected.
May the skies calm.
May the rivers return to their banks.
May you feel supported as the days unfold.

Stay safe everyone.
