This design draws inspiration from my earlier works based on the whakatauki “mango taringa tahi”, which refers to the people of Ngāti Mango - an original name of Ngāti Toa in Kāwhia and our migration south to Te Ūpoko o te Ika and Te Tai ihu. From these migrations came the iwi of Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Rārua. The whakatauki can be in many ways, but one speaks to whanaungatanga, collective strength, and the ability to move as one. Visually the design uses the rauru pattern to form mangopare shapes, mimicking the head of a shark. The rauru, a symbol of connection and continuity, can represent movement and flow, while the mangopare represents resilience, courage and perseverance. Together, these patterns express how the power and support of whānau help to build those same qualities within us.
NOTE: Earlier this year I was honoured to create some designs alongside for Mary Potter Hospice. This was a special process to create toi that was in connection to end of life care, celebrating life and honouring death. I created three designs as part of this mahi. Following that, I designed some variations inspired by that collection to share wider, with you all. These prints are the result of that.

This design represents the eyes of the ruru. The ruru is a known kaitiaki, and more specifically in Ngāti Toa, the ruru named Kopa. This design was inspired by the ruru as a watchful guardian, a messenger moving between the physical and spiritual realms, and a strong communicator carrying knowledge and warnings. In the story of Mataora and Niwareka, for example, the ruru accompanies Mataora on his journey through Rarohenga acting as one of his guides and protectors.
This work is a reminder to listen to our instincts and the subtle signs that speak to our inner world. It represents the power of our thoughts, awareness, and understanding of who we are. The design speaks to balance: between inner reflection and outward expression, between our own insight and the guidance of our kaitiaki.
NOTE: Earlier this year I was honoured to create some designs alongside for Mary Potter Hospice. This was a special process to create toi that was brought to life in connection to end of life care, celebrating life and honouring death. I created three designs as part of this mahi. Following that, I designed some variations inspired by that collection to share wider, with you all. These prints are the result of that.

This design represents Hinenuitepō, the atua who ensures our safe passage as we cross from the physical world into the spiritual. She is the guardian who receives us into Rarohenga, embodying the natural cycle of life and death and the eternal rhythm of return. The design shows Hinenuitepō wrapping herself around another figure, their forms intertwined almost appearing as one. This image reflects both protection and surrender.
This design intends to remind us to our connection to the unseen, ki te wairua, ki ō tātou nei tūpuna hoki (and our ancestors), and to the continuation of our essence beyond the physical world.

HE AHA TE KŌRERO | ABOUT NGARU PŪHEKE:
This print is inspired by my original kōwhaiwhai Pūheke Mai Pūheke Atu (slide 4). Ngaru Pūheke is the final design I created as part of the Pūheke series that I started working on while living on the south coast of Te Upoko o te Ika at Taputeranga.
The Pūheke series takes inspiration from the whakarare pattern more commonly seen in whakairo (carving) in the marae. The adaption of the whakarare pattern is used as a different way to represent the movement of water, new perspective, regeneration, fluidity and agility.
The coastal settlements of Ngāti Toa Rangatira inspired the Pūheke series and represent agility and adaptability. While living on the south coast at Taputeranga I was inspired by the moana on my doorstep and taken by the continual movement of waves coming into the shore and returning back to the depths of the moana. I wanted to capture the idea that things are rarely set in stone, but forever moving, changing, and developing.
