Tax 'freedom' on May 7 Kiwis will pay off their collective taxes two days later this year.
If you have a March balance date and pay provisional tax, your final instalment for 2015 is due on 7 May. If you can't make that payment now is the time to be speaking to your accountant about alternatives.
End of the financial year today for most people. If you have stock (retail or livestock), don't forget to carry out a stock-take. Also, make sure you have written any bad debts off your ledger to ensure you are entitled to a deduction and review your fixed assets to see if there are any items that need writing off.

It's hardly surprising that IRD have finally 'wised-up' to the fact that salary & wage earners are only filing returns when they are due refunds. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. But in the mean-time, if you are unsure whether you need to file a return or just want to check whether a refund is due, please contact me.

2014 end-of-year income tax, Working for Families Tax Credits and student loan payments are due on 7 April (if you have a tax agent or accountant with a valid extension of time). It's always best to let your accountant know in plenty of time if you can't make payment. We have different options available to ensure any interest and late payment penalties are kept to a minimum.
