Positive Signs
Standout signs and bold branding for hardworking businesses.
I was helping another signee with an install once when it was time to cut the liner off… so I whipped out my favourite pink scissors. “Ohh!” My colleague said “… but of course, you were trained by # # ”
I was SO confused, because how else do you cut the liner off? It’s funny how you carry over the habits of the people who trained you - the good bad and ugly! And another good reason why doing training, networking and watching sign making videos is a great idea 😅
One of the tools I’ve picked up (been influenced to buy!) is a body guard knife. It took me a while I get in the habit of reaching for it but now it comes out at every window install 👷♀️✌️
And if anyone wants to tell me what the “correct” way to cut a liner is, I’m all ears! (although I’m not retiring my pink scissors anytime soon)

For those who are new here* Hi - I'm Amanda, a signwriter and sign geek working in Dunedin, New Zealand. Juggling owning a small business in a s**t economy while drinking too much coffee, being a Mum and trying to get my steps in.
Once upon a time I would share posts with the items Positive Signs had for sale, these would reach 32 people. So I began sharing snippets of what I was doing behind the scenes and a bit of my weird sense of humour! And it turns out that's way more interesting and in the last month I cracked 330,000 views which is more than double the number of people who even live in Dunedin!
Sharing my work and challenges has allowed me to connect with other signees and small business owners throughout NZ & beyond (Hi my Swiss Alps & Belarus friend from the DMs xx). It lets me learn from other people's experiences and perspectives plus its all entirely selfish as I can socialise from the comfort of my couch!
Having the confidence to be myself and share what I do, is only because of the lovely feedback I get. Not just online but in the real world with phone calls and emails! It makes a huge difference and gives me a boost, usually right when I'm questioning my sanity after staying late to edit together the day's thoughts 🤣
Love you guys x
*A few posts of mine decided to blow up over the weekend, and I've now got a few hundred more followers! Not life changing numbers but if you made 250+ new friends you'd be pretty excited too
A different conundrum today but would love a fresh perspective or different ideas for how to take orders, show people through the website and manage enquiries from walking. Our new website is Shopify based so we have the software side of things covered - it’s the hardware setup we can’t decide on!
Another story time from the school of hard knocks 😅 I’ve said it before, it’s only a mistake if you don’t learn from it 😬👷♀️✌️
5 things I won’t do as a signwriter…
Installing signs safely is a non negotiable regardless of budget. I’ve lost out on install jobs because I wouldn’t budge on the method (and I would do it again).
Shortcuts for short term saving… that’s meaning when you ask for a sign to be recovered. Fine in some cases but the majority of the time you are not going to get the quality or lifespan you’re hoping for but you won’t blame the sign board… you’ll blame the signmaker. Not worth my reputation.
And I hate car magnets with a passion. Just don’t.

I’ve had a big couple of computer work days which don’t make for good videos so here’s a pic that came up in my memories from Kelk Photography that I love 🥰👷♀️✌️
No bleed? No worries, I’ll give you bleed 👹

I have a very fraught relationship with the laminator… last week we did not part ways on the best of terms 😅 it’s one of the last pieces of equipment left from purchasing the business and when I started we were only laminating 610mm wide by a couple of meters tops sometimes 🫢😂 now there’s a 1600mm roll on it and running a whooollee lot longer, so the lack of a take up roll is starting to get niggly
This is a predicament most customers won’t even realise they are putting a sign shop in 😬 using someone else’s artwork - whose artwork is it?
