Carterton Space Week

Yesterday’s Space Week Careers Expo was a huge success! 🚀

We welcomed guests from Victoria University of Wellington, Massey University, Robinson Institute, the New Zealand Space Agency, and the US Embassy New Zealand, alongside local and international experts who shared incredible insights into the opportunities waiting in the aerospace industry.

Our rangatahi walked away buzzing with inspiration and fresh ideas for future pathways in space, from research and engineering to innovation and beyond.

A massive thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event such a powerful experience for our young people. The future of space in Aotearoa is looking bright!

Space Careers Day was co-organised with Go Carterton and Astrobiology.NZ, under the banner of Ten Years of Astrobiology in Aotearoa, with the support of a grant from the US Embassy and the education programme Spaceward Bound NZ

Set your alarms, stargazers. Early Monday morning, 8 September, Aotearoa will witness a total lunar eclipse, one of the most widely visible in history.

What to expect:

🌘 Eclipse begins around 3:00am
🌕 Turns red from about 4:40am
🌑 Totality at approximately 5:30am
🌄 Ends as the Moon sets in the west around 6:40am

The Moon will glow a deep red, creating a stunning Blood Moon. It’s early, but absolutely worth it.

Best viewed from spots with a clear western horizon. Rug up, grab a hot drink, and enjoy this celestial show.

As part of Space Week 2025, Go Carterton and Wai Art are inviting tamariki to let their imaginations blast off in our Kids’ Art Competition!

Theme: SPACE – think rockets, planets, galaxies, astronauts, or whatever cosmic wonders you can dream up.

Size: A4 (landscape)

Age groups:
5–8 years
8–10 years
10–12 years

Finalists will have their masterpieces displayed at the Wai Art Show (12–14 September, Carterton Events Centre)

Judged by well-known local artists Jean Mitchelmore and Barbara Caffell.

Entries close: Monday 8 September 2025
