Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with a big reputation

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with a big reputation for serious Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. Ata Rangi founder Clive Paton was one of four pioneer winegrowers who planted their first few acres of vines on the free-draining te

We've saved you a seat!
The release of our 2024 Pinot Noir Selection on 7 July will mark a significant milestone for Ata Rangi. It was Helen's 20th vintage making wine here and, as nature would have it, one of the finest seasons we’ve ever experienced.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the 2024 Pinot Noir Selection through tasting sessions at the Ata Rangi Wine Room, key events both here in New Zealand and across the ditch in Australia, and by-the-glass pours at a few of our favourite places to sit down, settle in, and enjoy good wine properly.
🍷
We'll be sharing details on here, and through our newsletter.

Making a wine is shaped through careful tasting, quiet assessment, and sometimes the art of blending — drawing together texture, structure, fragrance and detail until each part finds its place. At Ata Rangi, this is where patience meets intuition, and the wine becomes whole. It helps when the winemaker has spent 23 vintages getting familiar with the vineyards and how they respond to a season with their own voice.

The low light of Winter shining on the Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2025.
When you get a blue sky day at this time of year in Martinborough, there's still a little heat in the sunshine but you're starting to hanker for the cozy restorative taste of a textured Pinot Noir. The Crimson is fresh and perfumed, and has floral notes of rose, bergamot tea, ginger with more savoury salivating notes of roast lamb with a hint of mint. Delicious.

For the love of Chardonnay — we make two of them.
Expressions of Martinborough through the lens of this most popular grape.
What to expect:
2024 Pōtiki Chardonnay 🥧🍎🍘
Vineyards — Walnut Ridge, Cambrae & Craighall
Profile — nectarine, bergamot, apple pudding, miso paste and sesame seed cake.
"There's some fresh fruitiness here, and yet the wine feels shaped with fine, chalky texture and a core of mineral-charged acidity. A sense of restraint and tension, the high refreshment factor also part and parcel. Nectarine, crunchy red apples, cashew, lemongrass and a pretty spice mix. A modern take on the variety, done with aplomb."

2024 Masters Chardonnay 🍋 🌿🍪
Vineyard — Masters
Profile — toasted fennel seeds, white cardamon, lemon pith, and fresh biscuit.
"All the lights on, everybody home. This is a delight. A well-managed flinty edge, plus a deep line of acidity, lift and carry the fruit. Tarte au citron, fresh-cut green herbs and brine. Lively, bold and direct, this is yet another excellent chardonnay from a vineyard that has quickly risen to become a Martinborough taonga."

Winter is the great reset. Vines shed their leaves, take a deep breath and settle in for the long sleep of winter. Right now, we are doing as little as possible to disturb them, sheep take care of the under-vine sward as we allow them the time to reset before pruning starts in June.

Cellaring Wine ~ some quick tips to ensure your wine is well looked after so it's properly peachy when you reach into the cellar to savour it.
Basics:
😎 Keep it cool — and most importantly, consistent.
☀️Avoid light and heat — store away from windows, heaters and ovens.
🍾 Lie Corks on their side. Screw caps - on their side or standing up.
🧘A quiet, calm spot — avoid spaces next to busy appliances or heavy traffic areas
Best practice:
Once you've found that magic spot in your house to store your wine, an extra consideration is to note when the winemaker or wine writer recommends the wine will be at its optimal tasting age. You can find this on the tasting notes. Make a small note on the back label.
📞 If in doubt, get in touch. We have archive notes on all our wines and can happily help advise when and when not you might want to open your Ata Rangi.
Or visit our Tasting Notes page on the website: located at the footer.
