Now that Avatar: Fire and Ash is in cinemas, we can share the bespoke DIT and Qtake systems that Toothfish built for this film.
There were a number of earlier iterations of these machines used throughout principal photography of both Way of Water and Fire and Ash. During the covid break our team went back to the drawing board and came up with the carts you see here. They were first put into service in 2021 and were used for the bulk of shooting for Fire and Ash.
These groundbreaking machines were capable of handling multiple 3D camera rigs, recording and outputting both SDR, 24fps 3D and HDR 48fps 4K. We even had 3D playback to VR headsets!

Tonight sees the finale of After The Party, which is getting rave reviews in NZ and airs in Australia next year.
The Toothfish team was proud to play a pivotal role in bringing this series to the screen, providing on-set monitoring and playback, on-set streaming, wireless systems, data management, dailies creation, rushes archiving and mediating between our Wellington sets and Australian post team.
This was one of the first productions in NZ to utilise the Arri REVEAL colour pipeline and as well as three of the new Alexa35 cameras, we had a slew on mixed media including Alexa Mini, Sony A7, Kinefinity MAVO and and whole load of iPhones.
We even developed a few new tools for the show, including metadata parsing that allowed for parallel processing in post, leading to a considerably streamlined transition from offline to online.

Now that Avatar: The Way of Water is in cinemas we can finally share this.
Here it is. The most complicated Qtake system ever constructed. Yes, that is 26 channels of video recording (we actually ran out of letters in the alphabet)! 16 channels of HD 24fps and 10 channels of 4K 48fps across 7 Mac systems slaved together.
Without this system and the incredible team that ran it, these movies would not have been possible. The individual machines were built by Gaylen Nebeker and the team at Nebtek, and then the whole system was put together in NZ and operated by the team at Toothfish
