Symposium Brass brings together eight principal players from our major orchestras, alongside musicians whose work spans both international stages and some of New Zealand’s most recognised bands.
Trombonist Scott Taitoko has shared stages with Midnight Oil oil Salmonella Dub and Tiger Moth Band.
Trumpeter Barrett Hocking is a long-standing member of The Black Seeds and past Principal Trumpet Orchestra Wellington.
Drummer Joseph McCallum has toured the world with Tiny Ruins, The Veils, and Don McGlashan.
Bass trombonist Pablo Ruiz Henao has held principal chairs at the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest and the National Symphony of Colombia, and is currently principal bass trombone of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
Their programme, written by composer and trumpeter Cameron Pearce draws on a wide range of influences - Aaron Copland's wide-open American landscapes, the lyrical complexity of Canadian trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, French Romantic composer Gabriel Fauré, and the minimalist pulse of Steve Reich
The result is symphonic, spacious, and genuinely moving.
Symposium Brass also features Tom Rainey on piano, Jimmy Rainey as soloist on saxophone, and Thomas Eves, principal trumpet of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
This is music that defies categorisation and simply invites you to sit back and enjoy the ride.

"The influences shaping this body of work span a wide spectrum, including, jazz, classical, pop and folk traditions. As a collection, the music resists easy categorisation, and I welcome the possibility that different listeners may connect with different elements within it." - Cameron Pearce, composer and Symposium Brass trumpeter/flugelhorn player
Symposium Brass lands in Napier today and will be performing Progression tonight at MTG Hawke's Bay, 7.30pm.
