Windthrow is a natural event that is frequently found across forests throughout the world. With production forests, windthrow is one of the largest risks that is continually monitored. IFS Growth is able to provide this monitoring service to clients, ensuring they have relevant information to best make investment decisions.
These pictures show a mature forest over the space of several months and the difference that can be observed in standing trees. It is great to be able to use drone technology to provide this to our clients. Shout out to our internal GIS team for their experience in this space!

Tis the season to be planting!
Our Nelson team have been scratching around some planting lately. Check out some of the planting photos of some recent afforestation. Hard boney country with relatively slower grass growth which is seeing some Douglas Fir being planted. Changing slopes can result in seedling spacings needing to be altered, see some action shots of this happening out on the hill. Credit to Rai Silviculture for a job well done planting on the hillside for this one.

Traffic management is an integral component of a roadside harvest, particularly in Western Southland on Friday which saw 3 x One Forest personnel on duty, ensuring all road users were kept safe on their journey.

A lot of work goes in to preparing and organising a harvest operation to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible.
On the flip side of this there is also a lot of work that goes into ensuring the site is left in a state where it’s going to remain the same in the future.
In terms of environmental risks the largest risk is from the period of harvesting for the following 5 – 6 years. Until vegetation/canopy cover is returned there is a larger volume of water reaching exposed soils. The water has the potential to accumulate, build speed and transport sediment.
As part of our post-harvest operations we work with our contractors to mitigate these environmental risks to ensure the landscape remains the same and in a usable state for the future.
Shout out to Endurance Logging who were a fundamental part of this harvest and post-harvest clean up operation.
It's all go down South, even some white stuff on the ground at Glenfiddich. The Anderson Logging crew cutting up wood and loading the truck with the skidder dropping stems off.

With recent heavy rainfall events causing carnage around the top of the South Island, IFS Growth had been busy getting stuck into some of the recovery missions around the place.
Our Cable Bay operation saw the Nelson crew working closely with the community so when this heavy rainfall event was occurring they were of high priority to ensure everyone was safe and had a home to come back to.
In the last significant rainfall event Cable Bay wasn’t accessible for some time, so it unfortunately wasn’t unfamiliar to have significant slips causing damage to the roading infrastructure.
Due to our Cable Bay Forest harvest operation being underway, the machinery and skillset were on hand to get access reinstated for those who had been significantly effected by the rainfall event.
See some photos taken on Thursday 18th August when the road recovery mission was in motion. Credit goes to all those who played a big part in reinstating access and helping those who were in need. Great to be part of community that bands together in times of hardship and uncertainty.
Special mention goes out to Berkett Contracting who were pivotal in reinstating vehicle access to the Cable Bay Community.
