Today I was one of only three Hamilton City Councillors to vote for the East-West model for the Government’s local government amalgamation process.

I strongly prefer a proactive Head Start approach over a reactive Backstop. I believe Hamilton City Council must have a voice at the decision-making table.

Regional collaboration with Iwi and other Councils is the only way forward. Stronger outcomes happen when we work together.

The other two Councillors who voted for this model were Robbie Neha and Maria Huata on this vote. Unfortunately we lost the vote 3:12.

This means we are in Back Stop, which means the Government may choose to not engage with us, and simply place us into a model of their choice.

This week I attended the WEL Energy Trust AGM, and spoke on behalf of Hamilton City Council, acknowledging the important relationship we have as a capital beneficiary of WEL Energy Trust. The recently-established Capital Beneficiary Fund is providing significant impact in our community, funding projects such as the Korikori artificial sports turf. I look forward to a positive, constructive next three years working with the WEL Energy Trust trustees and staff.
