Bushin Ryu teaches practical self defence and martial science

4th Dan Bushin Ryu We are a self defence school not a sports based school.

We have a traditional base with a focus on the Martial Sciences - Bujutsu. Old Okinawan Karate is often referred to as the original MMA. The Bushin Ryu Bujustu-kai syllabus contains;
- empty hand techniques
- punching
- kicking
- grappling (standing up and on the floor)
- weapons (bo, knife, sticks)

We had a very special day yesterday - our first Bushin Ryu Bujutsu-kai dan grade.
Allister Gillam - Boo successfully passed his Bushin Ryu Dan grade test, a just under 6hr ordeal ending in no rules MMA sparring for more than 15 rounds…after a long day.
Awesome.
And all congratulations to Allister who has shown incredible stickability and determination - I am mean and at Bushin Ryu we aim to maintain a high standard of blackbelt…our Dan grade is still hard earned, and we manage to keep our standards.
It took over 10 years - but Boo has been here from the start and could have done this years ago but no hurry just plod along to make a martial artists with a depth of modern understanding in martial arts not many have.
I couldn’t be happier.
In a few days once he is over the bruises and exhaustion…I believe he will be very happy to be THE FIRST BUSHIN RYU BUJUTSU-KAI BLACKBELT.

Holy sh*te the martial arts legends are dying off.
Bringing real combat back into karate was a gift Peter gave.
Over 30 years as security his unarmed combat systems always pushed forward. The depth of understanding of ‘how street combat actually happens’ was spread to many students and the British Combat Association became a world leader.
Chuck now Peter… some of the new old masters are dying.
Very sad.

It is with the greatest possible sorrow that we share with you the news that Peter Consterdine died in the early hours of Thursday morning, with Dawn at his side. He was greatly unimpressed with the acceleration of his illness and has left us all far earlier than he would have chosen; indeed, someone of such strength and character would have seemed invincible, so his death does come as a shock.

As members of the association, you all know that his legacy will truly make him immortal. In due course, we will write a suitable account of the huge impact he has had on our community and beyond. This is not that time – everyone needs time to absorb this news and to process it – especially Dawn and those closest to Peter.

We deeply appreciate the respectful ‘holding back’ from many of you as you awaited official word of his passing. With someone of his stature, you can understand that such terrible news spread quickly and many did not know that there had not been time to pass on the news sensitively and personally to his family and friends who should not be learning such news through social media. We will be inviting memories and tributes on the BCA/BCKA/WCA pages in due course and naturally will be providing a more extensive narrative of his phenomenal achievements and influence.

It will soon be business as usual in the office, with the great team Peter built over many decades providing continuity and support for you all. The senior instructor team, club instructors and individual members will continue Peter’s unparalleled influence and legacy. Thanks to all of Peter’s work and dedication, The Combat Group is, and will remain, a unique and unsurpassed martial arts and self-defence collective. We will be back in touch soon and thank you all for your support at this most difficult of times.

What You See In the Drill

Because of the speed of the initiation, the drill triggers a micro-flinch — and that’s the key. This drill develops flinch conversion into the crossed-extensor chain, which is pound-for-pound the strongest position your body can produce.

This is one of the many drills we use to develop what I call the biological airbag — a primal, gross-motor barrier that deploys between you and danger before your conscious mind even registers the threat.

➡️The defender goes from off-balance to on-balance without warning (mirrors real surprise).
➡️The extensor chain (pushing away danger) defeats the flexor chain (the grab).
➡️The mind learns to trust the body — which shortens decision time when it matters.

Physiology rules. We just teach you to use it with intelligence.

For four decades I’ve studied that biology and built the SPEAR System® around it. The result: training that amplifies what your body already knows so you’re safer sooner, not slower.
