With the school holidays fast approaching, head down to Tūrangi coinciding with the dates below if you can. A new initiative from the TNTC and a great one at that.

Included with general admission
- Fly-tying workshops these school holidays!

Come along on 8, 13 or 16 July and have a go at fly tying. Workshops run from 10.30am–2.30pm and are free with general admission.

We’ll also have a live fly-tying demonstration in the Museum, where you can connect, observe and learn. If you feel inspired, head over to the Education Room and join our friends from DOC for the workshop.

Also on these dates, we’ll be trialling Museum tours at 12.30pm.

These are new initiatives for us, so we’d really appreciate your feedback as we continue to develop these programmes.

Monday evening saw 10 willing participants seated quietly in a well lit room at the Trust Waikato Building for the first of 5 HAC winter fly tying evenings. An intermediate course with a wide mix of tiers, Charlie F running the show with Ray and Gavin helping out.

The first tie was a Bronwyn Wilson pattern, a Woolly Bu**er variant which I don’t know the name of and it would be pretty cool if Bronwyn could let us know. Any trout fisher who hasn’t heard of Bronwyn should have a read of https://shepherdess.co.nz/reading-the-water/ .

Second tie was the Shakey Bealey a pattern I never heard of, check it out here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFbiMu5yUNE .

These patterns challenged the majority which was what we were after.

Ollie Bassett, current New Zealand National Champion is well know for his competition skills but he is also a terrific catcher of specimen fish and now a guide, taking locals and visitors to spots where they will encounter huge fish.

HAC was delighted to welcome Ollie, along with his "prison break" haircut to the club last week, where he shared some tactics and locations to catch a huge New Zealand trout.
