We started out designing and building equipment for the airline and pneumatics sector over 40 years ago in Hamilton, New Zealand. RML Machinery started taking on projects from other industries, and soon expanded into a full in-house machinery building service. In the early 2000s we branched out into robotics and autonomous vehicles. Today we are recognised industry leaders in Production Automation and Component Manufacturing, servicing customers in New Zealand, Australia, India and the US.
When Tip Top needed to automate a complex, high-speed end‑of‑line packaging process, we had the opportunity to work with the ice-cream industry-leading company again. What they required was a solution to:
🟠 Erect, load, and close four carton sizes
🟠 Feed into a case packer capable of five shipper SKUs
🟠 Run at 300 ice creams per minute
🟠 Protect a delicate chocolate-coated product
🟠 All within a very tight footprint

Facing 24/7 reliability needs and 26 tricky SKUs (including caster and icing sugar), we collaborated on tear-off top/front box designs, fine-tuned fill volumes and implemented an easy-to-read HMI for on-demand product changeover. Using tried-and-tested chimney-style stacking and an ABB robotic arm, one operator can now monitor the entire line, which results in major labour savings.

Learn more about how we turned a co‑packed bottleneck into an in‑house, high‑throughput, customised production automation line. Working with Westland’s existing product and packaging, we integrated a customised two‑axis robot infeed into a standard cartoner, added a specialised pick‑and‑place case packer for shelf‑ready trays, inline date‑code printing, and a standard RML palletiser with layer boards, delivering a seamless flow from bulk unpack to wrapped pallets.
The result for Westland was that they could put the production process back into their cool store, so there was much less freight sending their product to the co-packer and then bring it back once it was packed, which was a cost- and time-saving decision.

What we delivered:
🔸Custom Automated RSC Top-Load Case Packer with automated product laning, RSC erecting, robotic loading via the RML Hawk, and tape closing.
🔸Integrated track & trace with each product scanned during loading, check-weighed, and labelled, as well as cases and pallets tracked end-to-end.
🔸A Robotic Palletising System with slip-sheet handling, pallet feed stacks, and staged pallet output.
The result for Oceania Dairy:
🔸$1.4M in customer savings in the first year after installation.
🔸Improved product traceability, consistent pack quality, and higher throughput with reduced labour.
