Post COVID-19 syndrome (also known as Long Covid) is a term used to describe the effects of COVID-19 that continue for weeks or months beyond the initial illness, it is something that scares a lot of people in the fitness community as it essentially effects our way of life. Due to the virus typically affecting ones respiratory systems we have to be really careful as more information comes in.
Here are some strategies/recommendations to ease your way back into exercise and to discourage the onset of Long Covid.
If the person was hospitalized and has evidence of heart injury they should look to have 3 to 6 months off from strenuous exercise and seek medical approval before resuming exercise.
If the person was hospitalized with no signs of heart injury or damage they should wait for all symptoms to dissipate, seek medical approval and wait another two weeks before resuming exercise.
For those with more mild symptoms it is still recommended that you wait for all symptoms to dissipate and wait another two weeks before resuming exercise.
For those who test positive with no symptoms it is still recommended to have 2 weeks off from the day of testing positive before resuming exercise.
When slowing your way into working, you should start off at around 50% of the load/intensity that you were performing at before you transmitted the virus. A few signs that you should slow down are excessive shortness of breath, excessive fatigue, recurring symptoms from when you were positive, and any pressure or pain in your chest.
