A few weeks ago I processed the Granny Smith apples from my tree. I didn't think that I got very many apples - particularly due to my little one trialling so many of the unripe apples. Yes. I nearly cried each time. But I am so grateful to have that complaint! And a good reason to plant a second tree! 🍏🍏🍏

Apple sauce was made - about 5 litres (photos to come). Sauce is my favourite way to process apple. But did you know you can make your own apple cider vinegar from the scraps? Pretty cool, hey?

This type of vinegar contains malic, tartaric, and acetic acids. All involved in the energy (Krebs) cycle. But apple cider vinegar (ACV) is most commonly known in the natural health world for aiding in healthy digestion.

I like to buy only plain yoghurt. Plain greek yoghurt is even better! The extra fat and protein means that you stay full for longer, and avoid the swift up and down of a sugar energy surge and crash. The added saturated fat nourishes the brain and builds the membranes of every cell in your body. A lesser known fact is that some vitamins need fat to be able to be absorbed in the body! A, D, E, K, for example. They are fat soluble!

An even LESSER known fact is that fat can add immense potency to things like fish oils, increasing the bioavailability to your body up to x8!! That means you can take much less to achieve the same effects. Or viewed in a different light, you need to take much more than you think (or would like to pay for) to absorb what you actually need.

If you don't like the sugar free taste - not a problem. For this morning's yoghurt I've added lemon curd (lemon honey as some call it). Home made, and the amount of sugar is controlled. I know exactly what is in it. And the eggs come from my own chooks, the lemons from my father in law. A bit of zinc from the pumpkin seeds (and the parasites hate it too). And chia - a bit of love for the gut lining.

Other sweeteners I often use are maple syrup, home made jams like strawberry, feijoa or fig, or even just honey. Yum. Easy. 😍🫢

Common Causes of Digestive Symptoms 26/04/2023

Gut issues, from the farty, burpy, bloaty kind, to the can't-get-off-the-couch-after-eating-kind, are becoming so common it is scary!! An isolated burp every now and then after a cheeky soda is fine. Several burps a day, after no soda, is a pattern and a reg flag that should not be ignored! Same goes for so many other gut symptoms! When we act early, we save ourselves money and potential physical suffering down the track. It's so important to get educated about our guts, and how to keep them working and healthy!! This video is a good place to start πŸ˜‰.

Dairy-Free passionfruit and orange ice cream. 🍦☺️
Smash up some freeze dried turmeric (or may just be dried but they were super hard!). I got these from a local Indian produce store.
Whizz it all up in a blender: passionfruit, oranges, turmeric, pinch of good salt, can of coconut cream, tablespoon or so of gelatin or collagen powder, and raw honey to taste. Can add kelp flakes for additional nutritional value. Very refreshing.
If you don't have an ice cream maker, simply pour into a flattish container and as it freezes, take it out and stir maybe once to redistribute ice crystals, for a smoother end result.

Finally picked all the Granny Smith Apples 🍏🍏 off the tree. Whoops - almost accidentally donated them to the very keen possum we seem to have squatting in our shed based on the size of the droppings in there! πŸ˜† Only a small yield so I'll have to think carefully how I will preserve them...Apple sauce I think. It is great for the gut - pectin and all that - and tastes so delicious in oats, on pancakes, with yoghurt. Yup. It's decided 😍.

A morning in the garden which is more like a jungle at the moment! Much to do in preparation for the winter crops!

In need of a snack that is easy on the stomach, smooth and creamy, low carb and yum yum yum (how I describe all foods to my toddler). So I turned to a berry, passionfruit, collagen powder, flax seed, pumpkin seed, lemon, and almond milk smoothie. I added a bit of cardamom for something different. Hit the spot. πŸ‘πŸ€€πŸ«πŸ’πŸ“πŸ‹

Amaranth makes the most delicious, creamy, tasty porridge. The grains are so small but they swell a crazy amount, making it very cost effective. Cooked simply with water and salt. Finished with a dot of butter or virgin coconut oil. Some maple syrup on mornings where I didn’t sweeten with dates. A sprinkle of ground flax. Some plain yoghurt. This morning I threw in some frozen feijoa pulp that I saved from these gigantic fruits I got off a friend. 🍯🍚Y esterday daycare asked me what I feed my son as his p**p looks very different from all the other toddlers πŸ˜‚. He is a picky eater (the shame), so this really is a winner.

It is generally easy on the digestive system, calming to the digestive tract due to its mucilage forming characteristic (which is what lends it such amazing creaminess), high in vitamin B3 which supports mental health, and super high in the amino acid lysine - meaning it helps to combat cold sores (particularly handy as we move into winter here in the southern hemisphere). This little Aztec grain of the Gods is tiny but mighty.
