Rholene Singleton Jewellery Designs
I'm a silversmith in Feilding, New Zealand. Specialising in sterling silver pieces, weekend workshops and jewellery making short courses.
I've learnt the hard way to always check and sand my hammer heads before starting a new textured design. The tiniest little scratch on them will transfer onto the metal and can easily ruin an otherwise perfectly made piece.
I use 800 - 1200 grit sandpaper to sand and clean my hammer heads...round or flat, depending on the piece I'm working on.
Handcrafted silver jewellery pieces are never perfect. It's human made and that's what makes it unique and gives it character and soul. But we still try our best to deliver a beautifully finished product, as I hope to have done for my customer here. π©·

I'm so happy to be back in my garage studio again after a lovely mid year holiday. π©· We went to Christchurch visiting friends, finished a couple of home renovation jobs, and I watched the last leaves fall off the trees in my garden. And so I'll be keeping myself very busy in the next few months trying to keep the winter blues away π
There are lots of new workshops starting soon, and I've already started preparing them for you today. These are mostly repeats of some previous workshops, so if you've missed out on them earlier this year then now is your chance to book. But brand new ones are also in the works and I'll add them to my website soon...so watch this space or sign up to my newsletter if you'd like to be the first to know.

This Zebra ring brings back so many memories from my time back home in South Africa last year. π©· Spending more than a month in the african bush and sun was just so amazing, and I already miss it SO much again...especially now that winter has well and truly settled in New Zealand.
Adjustable Zebra ring completely hand forged from sterling silver. I'm very happy with how this ring turned out... definitely my new favourite. π
I want to make a few more before announcing a shop update, but let me know in the meantime if you're interested. X
(Maybe not the best video...sorry. I have to work a bit on my lighting skills to reduce the reflection on these high shine pieces)
I still prefer hand sanding my pieces...only sanding in one direction per grit, then switching at a 90 degree angle before continuing with a finer grit.
This is a much slower and time consuming process than using power tools, but it gives me more control on the piece and ensures a smooth high shine finish. It also removes any fire scale much better in my opinion. ππ©·

Last night we started the new 4-week jewellery making course for beginners, focusing on the correct use of a jewellers saw and needle files. It didn't take long for Sandra and Casey to get comfortable and confident with these tools, and I can't wait to see what they do next week. π©·
