๐ Our powder coating team has a new toy!
The new water wall booth is now installed and fully operational in our powder coating workshop ๐
Built from galvanised sheetmetal and compliant with AS/NZS 4114:2020, this impressive addition is designed to capture and filter overspray during the painting process ๐จ๐ก๏ธ
Not only does it help protect the health of our team ๐ทโโ๏ธ๐ทโโ๏ธ, it also supports high volume production while improving efficiency and safety across our coating space โ๏ธโ
๐ Measuring 5.2m long x 4.2m wide x 2.9m high, the booth significantly enhances our powder coating capability โ but our capacity doesnโt stop there!
๐ฅ Thanks to our giant oven, we can handle parts up to 8 metres long.
๐ This investment replaces our former water wall booth with a significantly larger, more efficient and impressive unit, enabling greater throughput ๐ and smoother production flow โ๏ธโจ

Great to see the continued investment in the future of our industry ๐
Our CEO, Sally Henderson, was up in Auckland recently for the HERA board meeting โ and had the chance to be part of the opening of HERAโs impressive new facility, the HERA Innovation Lab. Congratulations to the HERA team on what is a fantastic milestone for New Zealandโs metals and engineering sector ๐
For those who arenโt familiar, HERA plays a critical role in advancing innovation, standards, and capability across our industry. Weโre proud to have Sally representing the South via the HERA Board, helping bring a regional voice into national conversations that shape the future of engineering in New Zealand.
If you're curious about how HERA can support your business, capability, or projects, feel free to reach out to Sally โ always happy to connect.

Weโre pretty excited to be getting back into the big workshop soon, now that itโs nearing completion ๐๏ธโจ One piece of kit the team have definitely missed? The mighty 500T roller ๐ช
So hereโs a little to one of the larger projects rolled out by the beastโฆ ๐
We sub-contracted to RCR a few years back to create this massive chimney for Mataura Valley Milk ๐ฅ๐ญ
๐น 34-metre-long chimney stack
๐น 4.2 metres in diameter
๐น Fabricated from medium tensile carbon steel (8mmโ20mm thick)
๐น Base rings built from 40mm plate for extra strength
All of it was rolled on our PS 500 Roundo Roller, welded, and assembled right here in our fabrication workshop ๐ง
The final result?
๐ 36 metres long
๐ 58 tonnes of solid engineering ๐ฅ
Once completed, the chimney made its journey from Dunedin through Central Otago to Mataura Valley Milkโs milk powder plant near Gore ๐ โฆand was successfully installed by our team on site โ
Great to look back on projects like this โ and even better knowing weโll be back rolling jobs like these again soon ๐

๐ฅ Things are heating up in the workshop! ๐ฅ
Our large heat treatment processing oven is currently running around the clock, handling some very large and complex fabricated components. This post-weld heat treatment before machining plays a critical role in stress-relieving the metal, helping to prevent cracking and ensuring long-term performance.
This impressive oven โ measuring 5.5m square by 1.4m high โ can reach temperatures of up to 700ยฐC. ๐ก๏ธ
For this process, we carefully control the cycle:
โข Heating at a maximum rate of 50ยฐC per hour โฑ๏ธ
โข Holding at temperature for 4 hours ๐ง
โข Controlled cooling at approximately 70ยฐC per hour
Precision, control, and consistency are key to achieving the best possible results. โ

โจ Projects like this are why we love what we do.
Working alongside talented designers, trusted partners, and our wider community to deliver something that genuinely enhances a public space is always a highlight for our team.
๐Huge congratulations to everyone involved and thanks for sharing this post with us Dream South D ๐
The fabricated and powderโcoated pieces were also a real standout at the Business-South & SOREC event at our workshops last week โ well admired โค๏ธ

โญ What a pleasure to be the venue and hosts for the recent Business-South & SOREC Southland + Otago Regional Engineering Collective - Manufacturing and Engineering Tour (MET) Series!
Guests enjoyed an exclusive behindโtheโscenes look at Farra, with the team showcasing our Kia and Mori CNC horizontal machining and boring capabilities, along with laser cutting and brake pressing in action ๐ ๏ธโจ
We took over the Mechanical Engineering Design office, and our CEO, Sally Henderson shared the Farra story. She also joined a panel discussion alongside Surge Koleman (Procurement Manager, Dunedin City Council) and Isabelle Prosser (Founder, Prosser Communication), with a great conversation facilitated around procurement ๐ฌ๐ค
It was a wellโattended and highly engaging event โ a huge thanks to James Bracewell from SOREC for making this happen and pulling together such a successful MET Series ๐๐

Lest We Forget. In Farraโs long history, war has touched our company and the lives of our people deeply โ with many of our people answering the call to serve, some returning home, and others who did not. This Anzac Day, we pause to remember all who served. โค๏ธ
