“My pain can’t be sciatica because it doesn’t follow the textbook nerve map.”
Actually... that’s not how real people work.
Sciatica is often described as pain travelling down the back of the leg, but in clinic it’s rarely that neat.
You might have:
• Glute pain only
• Hip and groin pain
• Pain in the calf but not the thigh
• Shin pain without much back pain
• Symptoms that move around from day to day
• Tingling one week and aching the next
Why?
Because nerves are living tissues, not wires.
When a nerve becomes irritated, the nervous system can become more sensitive. The brain can struggle to pinpoint exactly where the signal is coming from, which means symptoms don’t always stay within the tidy diagrams you see online.
This is also why two people with the same MRI finding can have completely different symptoms.
The location of your pain is only one piece of the puzzle.
A good assessment looks at:
✓ Your symptom behaviour
✓ Strength
✓ Reflexes
✓ Sensation
✓ Movement patterns
✓ How your symptoms respond to loading
Not just where it hurts.
If your symptoms don’t match the textbook picture, it doesn’t mean they’re not real, and it doesn’t mean you’re doomed.
The body is more complicated than an Instagram infographic.
