Well by Vets

Let’s be honest: tennis balls are cheap, easy to replace, and every dog seems to love them. It’s easy to see why they’re the default choice for a game of fetch! 🎾

While they seem harmless, they actually carry a few hidden risks that many people aren’t aware of. From our perspective in the clinic, investing a few extra dollars in a safer alternative fetch ball is well worth it.

If your dog is ball-obsessed or fetch is part of your daily routine, swipe through for a quick look at why we recommend making the swap and our personal favourite safe alternative.

In case you ever wondered why you leave the clinic needing a lint roller...

While a sudden “fur-dump” can look dramatic, it’s a completely normal physical response to acute stress in cats and dogs. If your pet really struggles with clinic visits, we always encourage speaking with your vet team beforehand. There are plenty of great options to help make their appointments much smoother!

When your pet isn’t feeling well, it’s completely natural to want to make them comfortable fast. Reaching for leftover meds, a script from another pet, or human remedies seems like a quick fix, but it can carry hidden risks.

Your vet would much rather you double-check with them first! They might recommend an appointment, refill a repeat prescription, or guide you on safe options and dosing using what you already have. You shouldn’t have to guess when it comes to medication safety.

Pro tip: If your pet has a chronic or recurring issue, talk to your vet during your next visit to create a clear plan (including any safe home options) for future flare-ups ahead of time.

Nicking a pet with scissors while trying to cut out a mat is easily one of the things we see owners feeling most guilty about in clinic.

When you feel a stubborn mat, the instinct is to grab a pair of scissors for a quick snip.

But because pet skin is remarkably thin and elastic, it is horrifyingly easy to accidentally cut them with scissors.

If you’ve ever been tempted, next time swap the scissors for a pair of electric clippers (yes, a human beard trimmer will do if that’s all you have), or leave the tricky mats to a professional groomer.

And if an accidental snip ever happens at home? Stay calm. Flip to the wound chapter in your Pet Illnesses & Emergencies book and follow steps to control bleeding and temporary bandaging before heading to your vet.

Have you ever had a close call with a stubborn hair mat? Let us know in the comments.
