Between 2015-2020, I was negotiating for $28/hr because that was a comfortable wage in Auckland.
Fast forward to 2026, and the official 'Living Wage' has finally hit $28.95.
My 'premium' wage from a few years ago is now officially the new 'bare minimum.'
The floor moved up, but the ceiling stayed exactly where it was.
In 2015, $28/hr was $9 above the Living Wage.
In 2026, $28/hr is $0.95 BELOW the Living Wage.
Same number, totally different life. (Excluding long term employees with annual % raises and trades that have a higher minimum wage and wage rate, however the floor rate has caught up as well)
Anyone else feeling like they're working 10x harder just to stay in the same place?
I'm voting for the party that can make it law that $33/hr is the minimum wage increasing by $10 every 10 yrs or at a rate that keeps up with inflation.
